I've been looking a little at some Russian hand crankers and have a little confusion over movements. I see some with what are being called pocket watch movements. One is the Poljot 3603 and the other the Moljina 3603. Is this the same movement? Sure looks the same to me but what do I know? That's why I am asking!! TIA for any help!!

I've wondered that too for the do look alike but do seem to be 2 very seperate companies that work hand in hand. But they are great movements I have both. ;)

The Poljot company was started in Moscow by Stalin in the 40's I believe when he bought the Dueber-Hampden watch company of America. They were making high end packet watches at the time under the Hampden name, so the Poljot watch line is based upon an American pocket watch design and has evolved since then. I think if you google Poljot or Russian watch history you will find some interesting reading. I just ordered a Moscow Classic and looking forward to geting it. Poljot uses several hand crankers...the most common "Unitas" type is the Poljot 3105 which has a higher bph and a longer power reserve. A couple of years ago, actual timing on several 3105 movements in these annals showed power reserves in excess of 60 hours. The Moljina/Poljot 3603 (same movement) is a much more refined and "prettier" movement, but with a slower bph! Marc or Tom (pacifichrono) may be able to give more detailed information. Movement: Poljot 3105 caliber with shock resistant balance, hand-wound, diameter 31 mm, height 5.05 mm, 17 Ruby jewels, 21,600 beats per hour, mean daily rate from -20 to +40 sec/day, 42-hour power reserve. Movement: Molnija 3603 caliber with shock resistant balance, hand-wound, diameter 36mm, height 4.6mm, 18 Ruby jewels, 18,000 beats per hour, 41 hour power reserve.

Thanks 3T masters! You guys rock. Now do I need a Russian in the collection? Should I just be satisfied with my VE's or would a handcranker from SAH make me happy? Looks like some good deals tonight!

I think a Molnija is a necessity simply because it is a beautiful movement and the Poljot Flying Tank is a nice example (I have it in red) and is certainly very easy on the budget!

The current version of the Flying Tank does not use the Molnija hand cranker anymore, they now have the Vostok 2416 Automatic movement.

Well, I managed to add another russian to the collection tonight, an Aviator automatic. Also have a seapro gmt and a g-shock incoming. I was busy this week. woohoo.gif Will post pics when they arrive. Scott
