I look at it like this. A homage to another watch is a bow of respect stating I love the design but can't afford the real deal. The watchmakers know the high end stuff is not for just anyone.

But a replica is a slap in the face to the real deal. A total disrespect to the true watch and designer. And I have no respect for those who make them or support them.

I think we talked about this before, but to me it looks too much like a replica. I understand that some makers borrow designs from others, but they are legit companies that put their name on it, and have to deal with copyright issues. These watches look exactly like a Panerai, but just don't have the name on it. Also, a lot of the same guys who make these watches, also make watches with "Panerai" and "Rolex" on them.

I always hate these homage versus fake threads. I don't think thread is the correct place for such a discussion. They never end well.

Ultimately, to each his/her own as long as you aren't breaking any laws.

There is a big differenc between buying a rep from the same mass production company who makes fakes, and then putting your name on it. Though some would consider this legitimate, I would much prefer a custom built watch to my specs with attention to detail, overall quality for a reasonable price. The guy I buy from has his own parts custom made to his specifications and builds them to order. I am very happy with the overall experience.

On the other hand, there are plenty of Ebay Germasian watches with the same poor quality Chinese movement that is supposed to look like a chronograph or a tourbillon, with inflated retail prices and essentially fabricated company histories.

But again, each person will like what they like at the price point that they can afford or justify. There is no reason to judge others who love watches. Just my opinion though.

There are plenty of threads on Paneristi forums of members building or paying to have built custom Panerai homage watches.

Also in my mind those companies who take the same watch and print a name on the dial doesn't make them better. I could print out a label with my own custom branding on any of my watches and that wouldn't change a thing about the watch in my mind. In fact, I think it would clutter up the dial. I personally prefer the completely sterile look of the dials.

Well stated.

1st of all i like to congratulate oldskool with his new purchase particularly the white dial, u dont see it that often. Wear it well mate. smile8.gifsmile8.gif. However i cant say i share his enthusiam regarding purchases from Davidsen or  any other replica makers.  A large chunk of their revenue is tru replicating watches,  imo having  the brand name on the watch crosses the rep v homage line.  Theres a reason why davidsen cant get a paypal account , he even has a blog  discussing about all the diff pam replica hes  releasing. :(:(  Having his own signature replica watch parts doesnt elevate his credibility amongst the various larger mass produced replica manufactuers. Places like timefactors, IWI, RXW etc2 who make good quality homages, im totally cool with that. woohoo.gifwoohoo.gif

just my 2c

Interesting point. Well, I don't think I will get into it much more than this: most of the inexpensive, but rebranded watches are likely just based on cheaper fake watches. They don't seem like a great investment for me over a slightly more expensive but much higher quality watch. (with better customer service and better name recognition. lol) Some of the companies that do a lot of branding on their Panhoms, have poor customer service and poor overall quality for the price. There are only a couple companies producing a very high quality homage watch. These are essentially just copies though with little to no branding on them at a higher price. Far be it from me to know everything or make moral judgements on the minor differences.

I just see it as such a grey area, so I follow my own insticts and let others do as they please.

...but thanks for the info. Seriously.

After seeing that white I bet it would look great with a antique white or Ivory/cream color too. ;)

I'm thinking pale cream croc with either white or black stitching. Or perhaps stitchless... with a nice deployant or one of my SC buckles.

the only difference between the guys who build their own from the ones who buy them already made with whatever dial on them is just that....they put their own together ....using the same parts from the same replica supplying manufacturers.....it is legal however to sell one with a no name dial though ,but the parts all come from the same place:P

in the lower end homages especially Panerai you can find the same quality in one of these for $124. as you will find in any of the others with exception of some custom made ie;Precista,Dievas,IWI etc. as these do have genuine Unitas movements and cost accordingly.....pick up one of these and then buy a plain dial and you saved yourself some $$$hand6.gif
