Yesterday I went to the local mall and for fun I thought I'd look at what the jewelers had as far as watches. Needless to say I was not impressed. There were entire cases dedicated to chines quartz movement crap with gold paint. One even had them on front center display. At one jeweler I asked to look at one watch that was actually a mechanical movement... The movement was held in place by a plastic ring and had a heart beat so slow it moved almost like a quartz. I politely said I was looking for something smoother and walked out. I did not find a single quality watch all day. Next time I won't waste an afternoon so frivolously but it was comical seeing all the crap displayed like it's great.

I will continue to wear my Philip Watch co. And not bother with looking at shop windows.

Not even worth looking at though you may find an independent here and there carrying Hamilton or Accutron. Regardless, the prices is never competitive. I have asked to look at some of the Hamiltons and then tried to bargain with them... not much room for them to play so I always go on my way.

If it is in a mall in my parts, it is probably not worth having.

It all depends on where you live or shop. In Phoenix/Scottsdale there is the Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall with the following Jewelery stores:

Tourneau
Mont Blanc
Ben Bridge Jeweler
Omega Store
Tiffany
Bulgari
Cartier

Within a 30 minute drive you can also visit various other stores in strip malls such as:

ED Marshall Jewelers
Cigar King (yes they sell lots of great watches)
Issac Jewelers
Towne Jewelers
Oliver Smith Jewelers
Hamra Jewelers
Estate Watch & Jewelery

All of the above locations carry lots of mid to high end watches. This is by no means a complete list either.

Wow Mike, that's not typical mall fare in these parts. I have had it with Winter (snowing at the moment,) may be it is time to head South West.

Over here on the other side of the pond, it's mostly the same thing...Some of the department stores are now carrying Hamilton, Mido, Epos, Seiko...the usual Rolex and Omega and higher level brands. But after all the damn tariffs and ridiculous mark ups, it's just not worth it. A Sumo runs about $800 or so for example. Just more incentive to use one of the many internet guys instead.

On another note, what did people do before the internet? As 95% of jewelers carry, crap, crap, and more crap. It would assume catalogs were big, maybe...
