I am a lurker and occasional poster here and could not let the day slip away without mentioning and acknowledging the anniversary today of that epic dive of USN Lieutenant Don Walsh and Jacques Picard when on January 23, 1960 they became the first human beings to ever conquer the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench inside the bathyscaphe "Trieste".  I believe this is one of, if not the most incredible accomplishments of mankind.  That includes walking on the moon (12 men have done this) or conquering Mt Everest (~1400 men and women have done that with a combined total of ~2000 successful ascents).

These 2 individuals were incredibly courageous and brave and deserve our respect and more than just a few lines in some obscure history book.  True hero's in the truest sense and meaning of the word!  There was a "Craaacck!" heard at quite some depth and they decided to end the journey early, after spending only 20 minutes at the bottom.  Could you imagine the fear that went through them as hey heard that??!!  They discovered a crack on one of the outside windows.

I feel so honored that I am able to wear a reminder of that incredible journey nearly 36,000 feet deep where the pressures approach 16000 lbs/sq in"!! Thanx to Mr. Helberg and the Helberg CH1, which is a true homage to honor the event and those individuals involved. My watch bears the Serial # 123 (January 23rd) to also commemorate the historic event.  I wear it with pride and anytime any one asks me about it..., they get the "whole 9 yards".

Please, everyone raise a glass to these 2 incredible gentleman and the crew and others involved in the project that made it happen today, January 23rd - 54 years ago!

I remember the day and always will...!

My Helberg CH1 Serial #123...:

I deviated from the original by getting it with the Diver's bezel (instead of the '"minimalist") and I need to mount it on the optional bracelet I purchased.  An incredibly great Homage to the original!  I can't put it on without thinking about these great men and their voyage.

(** The footnote: The third person was Cameron in 2013... but he bought his ticket w/fame & fortune - not a fan - can you tell?).
