Panerai announced today the introduction of the Luminor Due (meaning Two in Italian) lineup. The Luminor Due is the first Luminor case redesign from Panerai since the brand re-emerged in the 1990s, and with a profile that is said to be 10.5mm, is the thinnest Luminor case ever created.

Looks like the thinner Radiomir 1940 case, but with the patented Luminor crown lock system (I'll have to study the case contours a bit more to compare). All of this enabled by the new, thin In-House movements from Panerai. Like the Radiomir 1940 line, this new Luminor is being offered in 42mm and 45mm case sizes.

Here's a link to more information from ablogtowatch:

I like them, but really scratching my head that the Luminor line (a diver line watch) is only rated to 30m of water resistance (at first I thought it was a typo and they meant 300m...but the caseback is stamped 30m)...seems like a misstep for the Luminor line IMO. Heck, even the Radiomir 1940 lineup is rated for 100m WR! (I simply cannot understand why the Luminor Due case design would be rated lower than the Radiomir 1940 case???oh my.gif crap.gif

What do you all think?

Ha ha Greg...wishful thinking indeed...subtlelaugh.gif

Prices for the new Panerai Luminor Due models:
Panerai Luminor Due 3 Days PAM676 in 42mm steel is $8,100
Panerai Luminor Due 3 Days PAM677 in 42mm red gold is $22,100
Panerai Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic PAM674 in 45mm steel is $10,700
Panerai Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic PAM675 in 45mm red gold is $25,600

It's not that Panerai could not provide higher WR ratings (they know how to do this)...the crown lever system on Standard and Submersible models provides 300m to 1000m WR levels depending on the model.

Hi Stew
Having had 44mm luminous and 47mm subs and a cracker 47mm 6152, I am not an expert, but I know what I like. The slim cased rads are not very WR. It's a triumph of style over substance, sadly. I appreciate the thinner case design and slimness of the new inhouse. I rarely go deeper than 10 meters even with my legitimate diver watches. Perhaps it's a nod to the purpose to which we put our watches these days. As a style statement, I love the vintage lume, the sandwich dial and the whole shebang. If I was a regular diver to great depth, I would have to look elsewhere. Panerai are following a new path with this one, and deferring to divers mainly with the submersible line. What do you think? Would you buy one of the new rads, even with the weak WR?

Like you, I do like the thinner case option and the overall look, but if I were to go this route to take advantage of the new, thinner in-house movements from Panerai, I would likely go with one of the Radiomir 1940 models (which is a nod to the 1940 Radiomir that was produced when the Royal Navy's requirements became even more strict and the wire lugs of the original, late-1930's Radiomir were replaced with the fixed lugs shown on the Radiomir 1940.

Here's a pic of the Radiomir 1940 (this happens to be the smaller 42mm PAM512, but they are available in 45mm too).

Like I said, it's interesting that these, thinner Radiomir 1940 models are rated higher WR with 100m rating versus the 30m rating on the Luminor Due.
