Some call this a handwind El Primero.  A bit of a contradiction in terms, I'd say. 
Zenith is definitely right up there with the big boys. Unfortunately some design blunders in the "Defy" era, but that is in the past.

Much contradiction in fact Graham...
Zenith produce the El Primero(auto) caliber in 1969, stop the production during the quartz era and restart it in 84. The Elite caliber don't surface before 1994: First as an automatic version and soon after as a hand-wound alternative.
The Elite is beating at 28800bpm and the El Primero at 36000bpm.
The El Primero(420) hand-wound version seems to appear during the same period as the Elite caliber but the conception is very different as it is just a usual El Primero without it's automatic module.
