[size=4 My best mates and I had a great time Saturday night getting a brand new jukebox to belt out Beatles, Kalapana and Earth, Wind and Fire songs. We failed and blew out the darned fuses.

But I opened this very special, very well-selected bottle of single malt from Suntory of Japan and I can very confidently say this is the best of all single malts I've tried to-date (calling Tony, Chris and William to jump in).

This was 18 year old class and I was expecting a velvety smooth trip of the poison down my throat but as it turned out it was a little rougher, a little more memorable, much like a 12/15 year old.....but still smoother and more fragrant. I was very surprised at the punch from an 18 year old.

IMHO, this trumps my fave Lagavaulins, Bruichladichs and Laphroig Quarter casks. I think it's the very best from the Japanese harvests, better even than another popular brand from the same maker.

It's all gone now and I enjoyed it. Tony, somebody forgot to bring the Cubans that night, though.

The Cubans might have been a game changer to the flavor Jeff. From the shots of the glasses, the scotch appears nice and light with minimal coloring added if any.
My guess is that it will be next to impossible to find that in the States, but you never know.

I'll have to look for this Hakushu Single Malt Jeff. I'll admit I've not tried any of the Japanese single malts yet (I was planning to pick up a new Japanese Single Malt from "Nikka" that my local shop just brought in).

Like I said, I'll have to look for this one, and if they don't carry it, they can probably order it in for me...if they can get it through their distribution channel, they will...That's how I got the Penderyn that Will turned me onto (into the second bottle of that one).

Interesting that you list Lagavulin, Bruchladdich, and Laphroaig for comparisons to this one...Those brands tend to bring some big peat and smoke to the party (especially the L distillery's)...and Bruchladdich definitely has both spectrums (peat and non-peat) depending on which of the many choices you choose from that great distillery.

As Tony said...you guys didn't drink the whole bottle in one sitting now, did you???!!!!subtlelaugh.gif

@Tony.........you have very sharp eagle eyes. yes, the color is purity in a glass, no haze at all. We downed 2 bottles to include an Oban.

The Cubans may have caused us to drink 3, TD. (LOL)


@Chris.....unsure if this one is available in the US. I got this in Tokyo on one trip some time back. I just hope the Hakushu isn't a JDM otherwise it would be such a waste of good whisky. Hard to describe if peaty/salty because this grain is from the Japanese Alps, in the south. But you may have nailed what I was trying to say via the comparisons.

I'm waiting for the Sheriff to chime in. He may have tried this out.

You apparently have the tolerance of a Rhino, and definitely chose the right timepiece for the occasion!!!...thumbsup.gif...safety and toughness first for sure!!!

I looked into the Hakushu 18 and see that it is not really a Peated whiskey in profile, but it sounds spectacular (Hakushu is also producing some Peated whiskeys in its lineup). I'll still have to see if I can get it in the US...I'm always looking to expand my palate, so you've got me intrigued to try some Japanese whiskeys!

This Hakushu isn't imported in Norway Jeff... But others are.
Those I've seen are expensive compare to the others I drink from Scotland( and Whales)
The Yamazaki 18 y.o was selling at 190 US$ the bottle. It's gone now.
The Chichibu Single Malt New Born heavily peaked is available for 190$.

The Nikka Single Malt Yioichi 15 y.o is available now and seems to be the best compare to the Karuizawa Asama single malt.
The Nikka cost 147 $.

I'm not into trying every kind of whiskies around and since it's not cheap here, I buy sure values...
I bought my second bottle of Penderyn Madeira Single Malt and this one cost 86$ here.
Also I'm more of a traditional guy.
I don't buy vodkas which are from other countries than Poland, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Norway and I mean really distilled there.
Same for my Scotch...
