I think the change over on the trans was in 1968, the ones that were made in the 1st 6 months had the old style, after that the new one showed up. I can also get any part for the 68. the 73 sucked for getting door moldings, glass, etc.

Besides my '63 Ghia, I also had a new '69 VW Beetle and a new '73 Super Beetle, both custom.  I remember holding off buying the Beetle until the '69 model came out in the fall of 1968, because the '68 Beetle still used the ancient swing axle rear.  Maybe the Ghias used the IRS a year before the Beetles...dunno.  The '69 I bought from Chick Iverson VW on the Balboa penisula of Newport Beach...chromed Porsche wheels, Semperit Super Sport radials (cutting edge back then), a megaphone extractor exhaust, etc.  Loved that car until my (ex-) wife T-boned it before one year was on the clock.  It killed me!  Sold it and bought a Simca 1204 5-door.  Not quite the same.  Ha-ha.

In 1963 I went on active duty as an E3 in the SeaBees. After builders school in Oxnard,  I did two years duty at Barbers Point in Hawaii. I made $99/mo. when I went in and only $228 as an E5 whent I got an early out to enter Ohio State. The GI Bill paid for my school and I stayed in the reserves. I was a Chief E7 when I finally left because my unit no longer had a billet for me. I rebuilt VW bugs and buses all the way through school and bought my son a bug to fix up that was made the same month and year (10/72) that he was born when he was 16. We put a 1776 cc with dual Kadrons in it and we had it running great when he sold it to buy a GTI 3 years later.
