Bummer, Sean. I had a '63 Ghia about 40 years ago. I loved that car till the engine blew up in August 1967 while crossing the Arizona desert on my way back from leave to MCSC Barstow. My parents spent $500 to have a rebuilt engine installed (I was just a "poor" 19 year-old Marine). I hope you can salvage yours - - it looks like it was in really nice shape.

It was original. I had just done the interior, and put in a 2180 stroked engine with a freeway flyer transaxle. at least the racing wheels were at the house at the time. The car is a full loss. It was hit so hard the top and quarter panels were bent. I'll just find another body and start over.

Hard to keep those air cooled engines running in the AZ desert in August! $500 was a whole months pay for a 1LT back then.

That included my quarter's allowance and subsistance pay, while you were being provided with luxury living accomodaions and sumptuous gourmet meals......Living like a king!:dude:

Oh, and there's a reason why our "gourmet meals" were served to us in a place called the MESS HALL!

noncoms do pretty good these days. The chow is much better. In the airforce, we even had a special order line. your right about the engine, for sure! got it pulled this morning along with the interior and suspension. The carbs cost more than the car anyways. I put a pair of Weber 42mm dcnf 2 barrels on it, 12 lb flywheel, racing heads, roller rockers etc. took 20 minutes to jerk the engine out. Just take out 4 bolts, jack up the car and roll it out. I'm looking on line for a body in AZ. a 1968 is what I'm after. if you guys see one , let me know. I'll have it shipped to the body shop.

I have the freeway flyer to put in it. it will fit. it is the irs axle setup. 80 mph at 2200rpm. I think the change over on the trans was in 1968, the ones that were made in the 1st 6 months had the old style, after that the new one showed up. I can also get any part for the 68. the 73 sucked for getting door moldings, glass, etc.
