Arriving a few days ago the Steinhart (Ocean One) Vintage Military

So I'm a sucker for the sweet vintage Milsub 5517 that was a special military issued Sub that Rolex did for the Royal Navy in the 1970's.  It offered fixed lug bars, the 'Maxi-dial', a 60 minute bezel and the very cool sword hands for legibility.  The crazy prices that the rare milsub 5517's and 5513's have been selling for lately pretty much guarantees a homage piece is as close as I'm ever going to get... So....when I saw the announcement for the recently introduced Steinhart Vintage Military, it pushed just enough buttons for me to check it out.

This is my first 'Ocean' series Steinhart and I have to say that I'm quite impressed.  Given the price of entry for these, this is one of those no brainer pieces that (at least IMO), is delivering a lot for the price of entry...a real value.

Likes:  The vintage lumed 'maxi-dial' (aka - larger lume markers), the 60 minute bezel with nice, sharply machined edges, and the sword hands which give a nice Milsub 5517 vibe IMO.  Really like the well done raised and double-domed sapphire crystal and the 120 click bezel (which turns out 120 very solid clicks with very nice bezel action IMO).  The stock bracelet is well done overall (and very comfortable) with "single side" screw so bracelet adjustments are a snap (the clasp is just "ok" IMO...nothing special but does the job).  I swapped to a Nato after a day in keeping with the military theme of the original Milsub, which was offered only with fixed lug bars and a Nato.

The crown action (screwing in and out), was a little rough out of the box, but seems to be smoothing out nicely with use.

Basic specs from Steinhart website:

Movement: ETA 2824-2 Swiss Made, automatic, hacking seconds, 25 jewels
Case: stainless steel
Back: Stainless steel screwed, engraved..
Diameter: 42 mm (1.65 inches), without crown
Height: 13 mm
Weight: 190 g
Dial: black
Crystal: domed sapphire crystal, double anti-reflection coating on the inside
Bezel: black
Indices: Super Luminova vintage "old radium"
Lug width: 22mm
WaterRes: 300 metres/990 feet 30 ATM ..
Strap: stainless steel 22 mm, screwed
Buckle: stainless steel, safety clasp

Overall, very happy with this one...a great looking piece which overdelivers for the price IMO.  I'm loving it! thumbsup.gif

A few pics:

A couple shots in low-light to show the crystal profile a little better

Love it...this field is getting crowded with Orange, MKII, and Raven, but I do like the looks. This looks to be the best bang for the buck to date. Congratulations.

Man, you beat me to it. I really love the watch and at 42mm is the perfect classic size. That watch will be on my wrist once Anders has it available again on his site. Thanks for sharing!

Brice, Murphy, Nordstrom, Trent, Skip, William, BA211, Tony, Axelay, & Jeff...Thank you guys for all the kind words. thankyou.gif

Norstrom - Agree, appears to be some very good options out there from several micros including Orange, Mkii, and the upcoming Raven for a vintage military vibe.  This particular one from Steinhart pushed all the right buttons for me, and really is great bang for the buck.

Trent - I'm wondering where in the heck yours wentcrap.gif...I hope it arrives to you soon buddy!

William and Axelay - Agree, I very much like this one in the 42mm case size which suites the sub style case very, very well.

Tony - yes, that raised double domed sapphire crystal is one of my favorite aspects of this one.

Thanks again guys...here's another shot...
