After a few near misses and some ill-advised thoughts about buying a beat up version for restoration, I managed to find an A3651 in great condition at a fair price.

The A3651 was one of the early Defy models offered by Zenith after rolling out the Defy line in 1969.  My watch is from a later run (likely 1972 or '73), by which time the movement had been updated to a 2562 PC and the model number switched to 01-1070-290 as part of the new 9 digit system that stopped identifying each case by a different number.

The movement has clearly been serviced recently and the rubber seals are in perfect condition.

This watch came on a blue Zenith band, but some of the initial catalogs show it with the GF "ladder" metal bands.  Often with these late 60s/early 70s models, the crown has been replaced with a more modern Zenith crown.  Fortunately, mine still had the original crown.

Finally, a shot on the wrist where you can really see the amazing condition of the dial and lume...

Thanks for checking out my new arrival.

Mike

I love the design of this watch - from the octagonal case, to the simple but stylish face, to the cool hands...
Bravo.

Amazing find, Mike. That's a must have for every Zenith fan. That's already star caliber, right? All this time I thought the star caliber was a recent issue....back to 10 years ago. I envy you, amigobravo.gif

Thanks everyone.

Sometimes you just get lucky.  I got a tip from a fellow collector that it had gone up for sale and I bought it immediately.

You'll be seeing it a lot on the WRUW threads.

Mike
