Want a good camping knife for $10 Swedish Mora, I purchased mine with free shipping. This knife is a good general purpose knife that is the best value for the money that any of my crew has been able to find. http://www.eknifeworks.com/webapp/eCommerce/product.jsp?A=&range=41&Brand=47&Mode=Brand&SKU=FS760MG

Wow this sure brings back memories! I can personally attest to Mora knives, having owned one since I was born! My father grew up in the same...hmm I think county is the equivalent as where these are made. When I was born my parents recieved the usual gifts (for me) from their family and friends. Blankets, clothes, toys and such. My grandfather though wouldn't have it with all that "useless crap" as he put it. "Those things (all other gifts) aren't for him, they are to make it easier for YOU to take care of him. My gift is for him to use and you to worry about. Thats the way it should be." "All a young boy needs is a good knife, a forest and some imagination. That will teach him more than all those soft toys ever could." And then he put the knife in my crib (don't worry it was sheathed). Unwrapped. Needless to say my grandfather didn't believe in wrapping. Waste of paper. My mother protested wildly (after she first pulled the knife from my crib ofcourse) saying that he couldn't give me a knife, I'd cut myself. His only comment was: "Then he'll learn knives are sharp, thats a good first lesson. Told you it would teach him." It was a smaller model then showed in the link, made for kids and with a bigger guard. Ofcourse my parent's didn't give it to me until a couple of years later though. But thats not the point. The point is I learned more things using that knife then from any other thing I have ever owned. Probably because it was used the most when in company of my grandfather and father. Oh and when I grew enough to be able to hold a fullsized knife he gave me an upgrade to one of those too.

Great post and follow up comments, abrizz. Boy does this topic bring up memories. I think I'll start a small knife collection. I've always had a passing interest in them since I was a kid, but never took the time to learn much about them. I recall saving my allowance and shoveling driveways and whatnot to find a way to pay for a Schrade Uncle Henry, single blade folding knife. Probably about 3 inches or so closed. Heavy. Purpose built. My first real knife purchase. It came with a beautiful brown leather sheath/pouch. It was my constant companion on my fishing and camping trips growing up. I eventually upgraded to a larger Buck, fixed blade that brought me through my teens. Camping, hunting, fishing and etc. I lived near a lot of woods and a good size brook/stream with great fishing. My friends and I spent many nights camping by the side of the brook with our packs, sleeping bags, a fire… and each one of us with a knife. No-one in my family was into this stuff, but it came naturally to me and my friends. Learning to love the woods and be reasonably self sufficient. This ultimately led to a passion for backpacking and mountain climbing. Fast forward...oh… 30 years or so. I'm now married with kids, pets, house, and etc. I bought a camper to help the family enjoy being in the woods and am getting them into hiking. As I was getting ready for my first camping season with the family a few years back, I was going through a bunch of boxes. Didn't I come across the Schrade and Buck knives?! I don't think I’d seen those knives in more than 2 decades. I dropped everything and smiled at the memories they brought back to me. Over the next week or so, I took a little time cleaning them up. Especially the Schrade with the brass ends being all green and oxidized and etc. Got them cleaned, oiled, and sharpened. Reconditioned the leather. I keep them in a kitchen cabinet so I’ll never forget about them again and for easy access. Maybe someday, one of the kids will get as much from them as I did. Tall order since I have two daughters... but you never know. Anyway, thanks for the post and letting me blabber on about nothing. --Steve Last edited on Tue May 20th, 2008 09:14 am by steve6387 |
