Anyone else watching Shark week this week?

I've seen several of the shows before yet kind of drawn to them.

Sharks have always facinated me.

When in the Navy and out to se I was always looking in the water when I had the chance to see if I could see sharks.

I am 100% with you Gregger, the ocean belongs to the fish and I don't go into their world just like they do not come into mine.

My wife and I have been to Hawaii 16 times in the last 11 years.....the furthest I go in is up to my ankles....and even then I'm paying attention toon1.gif

Nic, I think you and I belong to the Peter Benchly/JAWS generation. That was among my best movies but also caused me (and almost an entire generation) to fear the deep. But somehow, whenever I go deep sea fishing, I always hope I get to see one.

John, I track the shark docus on Animal Planet or National Geographic and try not to miss any episode.

Out of those I have seen when out on the open ocean the Hammerheads always got that " Oh wow" out of me the most. They always seemed to be in large groups.

Saw a few Tiger sharks when in the Indian ocean. I told my crew mates to just make sure no one falls over board when they are around.

I never carried the die packs to be seen I just carried 2 or 3 strobe lights just in case. Sharks could become attracted to the die in the water.

Sharks are misunderstood creatures of the ocean.
There are only 3 types of sharks that are known to attack humans.

1) Bull Shark
2) Tiger Shark
3) Great White Shark

Sharks are highly intelligent, the brain-mass to body-mass ratio is closely
related to those of mammals and higher vertebrate species. The next
time you see a shark, basically think of them as a type of fish with a
cartilaginous skeleton with a streamline body and a lifespan of 100 years.

The largest of these sharks is the Whale Shark, this is a plankton eater
at 40 ft in length can weigh up to 13.6 tonnes (15 short tons).
This gentle giant can only be found in tropical and warm waters with
a lifespan of 70 years.  Divers and snorkelers can swim with this giant fish
without any risk apart from unintentionally being struck
by the shark's large tail fin.

Cheers,
Simon

Love the Shark week series!

I'm with Simon on this one guys.  My wife and I really do love to scuba dive, with this dictating many of our vacation destinations.  We have both been on dives with many different kinds of sharks and they are really there just minding there own business.

Now...that being said the list that Simon provided:  Bull shark, Tiger shark, Great White shark, & I'd probably add the Mako shark to that list would make me feel uneasy as they are known to be aggressive and have attacked humans.

Sharks are certainly fascinating creatures, if ever there was a purpose built predator design under the water, sharks sure nail it.

I love shark week and always watch them even the ones I have seen before. My son and I are huge shark lovers and always have been. I have logged over 300 dives off coast here in So Cal and the only sharks i have seen and gotten to play with are horned sharks while diving. Although I have seen blues, mako, thresher, and hammer heads from a boat or pier.

I strongly beleive we as a species need to do what we can to save these predators.

For those of you who like to see some of the bizaar sharks out there I give you 1 of my favorite unusual ones...

The Goblin Shark is a interesting one Greg. :)

Something I also enjoyed is cruising over the water in a helicopter about 75 to 100 feet up and checking out sea life in very clear water. Watching Wales, Dolphins and Sharks was the most fun for me. Flying fish were rather cool too.

No not a pilot I was Aircrew. ;)
