Jacky, I hold no illusion that Mac is ever going to replace Windows. What would all the IT departments have to do if companies switched to Mac OS? They'd all be out of a job. People could actually use their computers without all the nerds and geeks companies employ to keep them free of viruses, etc. No Geek would have to show every employee how to accomplish the even most simple tasks on his/her PC. :D And, think of the companies who depend on selling you anti-spam, anti-virus ware, etc. Do they want to see Mac gain much more than a 10% market share? Heavens no. They'd be out-of-business. :D:P What about the poor tech suport people in India hired to handle the countless number of calls from great PC companies such as Dell? Crap, they'd be out of a job too! No problems = No need for crazy calls half-way around the world to try and NOT get them fixed.:shock::shock: Gheez, KEN could play more golf and not have to build his own computer to get one that works. :D Ya know, I could sit here all day and list reasons, but I have to help my wife with a problem she is having with her PC laptop! :X Last edited on Sat May 6th, 2006 07:12 pm by mcwright |

Quite plainly, that growth (and profit) came from Apple's Ipod/music download business and not their computer business............but I'm not sure what your point is. The stock prices based on product adversity always rebound based upon product assurance. Additionally, while you talked about billions of "paper" loss on a temporary problems, you forgot to mention that Microsoft's 3rd quarter earnings were dissappointing because they only 16% growth in net profit primarily due to the X-Box disaster and reinvestment in technology. Just a guess, but perhaps Microsoft's stock price has more to do with the expectations associated with an industry giant rather than true performance delivered to the market. Still to be addressed after all of these posts is the primary issue...............if MAC is overwhelming better, as its followers claim, then why did it move, years ago, from dominant market leader to to a distant also ran follower of the PC and never regain a semblance of its former self. Even before the Windows OS stabilized, the PC left Apple in the dust and never looked back.:D I am not saying that Apple makes a bad product, but, obviously, in the business world, it is not considered a valuable commodity, on a risk/reward basis for most businesses (and we all know that no company would ever want to cut millions of $ in expenses by getting MAC so they could get rid of these Info Tech departments;)). JMHO I believe that Apple knows fully well they have lost the battle for the mass home/business computer market, and now the strategic fight between these two is for the music distribution business. Hopefully, Apple won't make the same mistake it did in computers and close its architecture to the rest of the world. That said.......I know that nothing will ever make an Apple user change to a PC user.......well, except for a great paying job at one of the 95% of the companies' using PC based technology! mcwright wrote: Never underestimate the competition. Never underestimate Steve Jobs. While your hero Uncle Bill lost BILLIONS last week in stock value based on reports of further delays of his Vista Operating system, Apple continues to grow a little stronger. Yeah, a measly 4% increase is what you're thinking, but the increase can only be coming from gaining back lost ground and getting new users. Baby steps, they may be, but they are steps up and not not down. Last edited on Sat May 6th, 2006 08:31 pm by KenC |

Speaking of computers: WHAT IS ELECTRICITY? Today's scientific question is: What in the world is electricity? And where does it go after it leaves the toaster? Here is a simple experiment that will teach you an important electrical lesson: On a cool, dry day, scuff your feet along a carpet, then reach your hand into a friend's mouth and touch one of his dental fillings. Did you notice how your friend twitched violently and cried out in pain? This teaches us that electricity can be a very powerful force, but we must never use it to hurt others *unless* we need to learn an important electrical lesson. It also teaches us how an electrical circuit works. When you scuffed your feet, you picked up batches of "electrons", which are very small objects that carpet manufacturers weave into carpets so they will attract dirt. The electrons travel through your bloodstream and collect in your finger, where they form a spark that leaps to your friend's filling, then travels down to his feet and back into the carpet, thus completing the circuit. Amazing electronic fact: If you scuffed your feet long enough without touching anything, you would build up so many electrons that your finger would explode! But this is nothing to worry about unless you have shag carpeting. Although we modern persons tend to take our electric lights, radios, mixers, etc. for granted, hundreds of years ago people did not have any of these things, which is just as well because there was no place to plug them in. Then along came the first Electrical Pioneer, Benjamin Franklin, who flew a kite in a lightning storm and received a severe electrical shock. This proved that lightning was powered by the same force as carpets, but it also damaged Franklin's brain so severely that he started speaking only in incomprehensible maxims, such as "A penny saved is a penny earned." Eventually he had to be given a job running the Post Office. After Franklin came a herd of Electrical Pioneers whose names have now become part of our electrical terminology: Myron Volt, Mary Louise Amp, James Watt, Bob Transformer, etc. These Pioneers conducted many important electrical experiments. Among them, Galvani discovered (this is the truth) that when he attached two different kinds of metal to the leg of a frog, an electrical current developed and the frog's leg kicked, even though it was no longer attached to the frog, which was dead anyway. Galvani's discovery led to enormous advances in the field of amphibian medicine. Today, skilled veterinary surgeons can take a frog that has been seriously injured or killed, implant pieces of metal in its muscles, and watch it hop back into the pond just like a normal frog, except for the fact that it now sinks like a stone. But the greatest Electrical Pioneer of them all was Thomas Edison, who was a brilliant inventor despite the fact that he had little formal education and lived in New Jersey. Edison's first major invention in 1877 was the phonograph, which could soon be found in thousands of American homes, where it basically sat until 1923, when the phonograph record was invented. But Edison's greatest achievement came in 1879 when he invented the electric company. Edison's design was a brilliant adaptation of the simple electric circuit: The electric company sends electricity through a wire to a customer, then immediately gets the electricity back through another wire, then (this is the brilliant part) sends it right back to the customer again. This means that an electric company can sell a customer the same batch of electricity thousands of times a day and never get caught, since very few customers take the time to examine their electricity closely to make sure they have new electrons. In fact the last year any new electricity was generated in the United States was 1937; the electric companies have been re-selling it ever since, which is why they have so much time to apply rate increases. Today, thanks to men like Edison and Franklin, and frogs like Galvani's, we receive almost unlimited benefits from electricity. For example, in the past decade scientists developed the laser, an electronic appliance so powerful that it can vaporize a bulldozer 2,000 yards away, yet so precise that doctors can use it to perform delicate operations on the human eyeball, provided they remember to change the power setting from "Vaporize Bulldozer" to "Delicate".

Here's the link again. The real world explanation as to why Macs are better, dollars and cents wise, than peecees. http://www.macvspc.info/pages/01f-pc_myths_debunked.html And, just some food for thought here Sir Ken. Just because the vast majority of people choose one product over another doesn't mean the product is better. It usually means that one product had a better marketing strategy than the other. I like to compare the to companies to automobiles. You definately get what you pay for. And, I for one, would much rather drive a Porche than a Ford. (No slam on Ford intended, I've owned several and have no issues with Ford.)

If I remember correctly, the DOD is using the latest Mac OS. Their reasoning? It's more secure than any other operating system available. KenC wrote: Correct...............even the Pentagon is not as screwed up as the LA School System:D

Guys, good debate but we have to keep a cool head.:) Ok I am not an american, but US Pentagon and FBI are the world's bench marks for military and police respectively. Only if ANYONE can tell me if any of them are using Mac, then I am convinced it is better than PC. Or else, even if we debate until THE COW JUMPS OVER THE MOON, there will be no ending. :) Hence, 3T admin team, I would like to ask for this post of mine to be closed. If anyone wants to carry on, I believe he or she is welcomed to start a FRESH topic like "PC vs Mac" for e.g. :) Last edited on Mon May 8th, 2006 03:14 am by watchboy |

If any of the posts appear that way (and I don't think they do), I am sure it is unintentional. It is a good debate, and one that will actually never be resolved. However, I for one have picked up some good info on MAC because of it.
