Guys and gals,

Unfortunately, one of my work PCs was hit with one of the nasty spywares that was similar to what I experienced last week at my home PC. This time the spyware is called "PESTTRAP"!!! It just installed itself without you knowing it!!!

It prompts you that you PC is infected with certain spywares and need certain software to clean it! This is not a simple software that you can use the "Add/Remove" programs from your PC's control panel! Even if you successfully use the "Add/Remove" programs to uninstall it, there will be some lingering files or folders in your PC which not everyone knows how to get rid of it!

For my last case which I was hit with the spyware SPYFALCON(whch was installed by itself too!!!!), I went to a PC forum http://www.castlecops.com, which is very good and helpful forum, and read the posts there and followed the procedures. Below are a few links from that forum, in which that forum actually writes a general but EFFECTIVE procedures for everyone who is hit with these spywares. Click on the links:

First read this(Intro):
http://wiki.castlecops.com/Malware_Removal_and_Prevention:_Introduction

Then read this to proceed to a DIY removal steps:
http://wiki.castlecops.com/Malware_Removal_and_Prevention:_Overview

If the spyware still persists after you followed those instructions above, do POST A NEW THREAD here:
http://castlecops.com/f67-Hijackthis_Spyware_Viruses_Worms_Trojans_Oh_My.html

And wait for help from the admin team there! And there are very responsive and helpful! Though sometimes they take up to 4-5 days to reply one's posts, but I MUST GIVE THEM THE CREDITS as the number of posts there are like HELL!!!

In my lastest case in which one of my work PCs was hit with "PESTTRAP", I am going to attempt to remove it myself with the instruction there.

And DO NOT FORGET to read the TIPS on the links above about future prevention measures of reinfection or attack by other spywares.

I'll keep you posted.

Gee, I don't even know if I should go there. Ken C will be lurking in the wings to blast me. :D So, rather than discuss differences, let just deal with facts. As 90-95% of the market is Windows based computers and operating systems, if you want to mess with people's computers you are going aim at the biggest target (i.e. Windows systems). And, Windows is the de-facto standard in business, government and most industry. So, if you want disrupt the world you are going to create spyware, adware, worms, and viruses for Windows.

Mac has been basically ignored for years. No viruses, no worms, no spyware has been created to attack its operating systems. Well, maybe a couple here and there. Mac's newest operating system is a little tougher to hack as well. But, two worms have been put out this year as the Mac OS has gained new popularity on the success of the iPod. Mac recently switched to Intel processors and that has also raised fears that they will be more of a target now for viruses. We will have to see. So far only a handful have been discovered vs. hundreds of thousands for the PC.

:D:D:D  The biggest difference is price! :D:D:D Not to mention the closed architecture! :X

There is a reason that most, by a huge percentage, of all of the computers in use in business (and personally) are PC as opposed to MAC (think about it:)) and yes, their success does make them a target and cause problems!  But their is a reason for their overwhelming success!

That said, I just finished building a new PC using the new 64bit AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice Core, ASUS MB, Seagate 160GB SATA HD, 1GB DDR RAM, MSI Nividea GeFORCE 256MB DDR Graphics card and the new Microsoft Windows XP 64 Operating System................ZZZZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

Yes, you do get what you pay for. Viruses, spyware, adware, etc. :P I've owned MANY a PC. I have built several. I even have some as door stops here in the house. :D:P I appreciate all of what Ken has to say. I used to say everything he spouts now. Until one day I finally tried a serious Mac system. I haven't looked back since. :dude:

Well said............now..... that said...........nothing you've said negates the absolute dominance of the PC in the business world where virtually everything is a risk vs reward situation.  Obviously, the business world feels that the "rewards" of using PC based systems and networks far outweighs the "risks".  Otherwise, the business world would be a MAC world.....Jobs would be living in the BG house and Bill would be looking for investors to keep the hardware division of his company viable (BTW........Microsoft doesn't even make PC's, never have...........it was an IBM product...........Billy is only a software guy!). :P But ultimately, at the individual level, it all comes down to personal preference.  Hey.............remember when UNIX, Xenix, LINUX, et al was the answer!!!:D

Guys, I solved that problem today and did a clean up! This PESTTRAP is not as bad as the Spyfalcon!:)

Now you guys got me thinking about PC and Mac. Mac is not BAD! But seriously, if MAC is much better than PC, then I believe A LOT OF BUSSINESS whether BIG or small firms would be using Mac instead of PC. And if that's the case, Bill Gates would not have been ranked #1 richest man in the world for so many years and running. I mean volume speak for itself.

I mean BIG firms have IT experts and Program Analysts, they should know if PC or Mac is good. Now that's said, I wonder what is US Pentagon using? PC or Mac???? Any idea?
:?

Never underestimate the competition. Never underestimate Steve Jobs. While your hero Uncle Bill lost BILLIONS last week in stock value based on reports of further delays of his Vista Operating system, Apple continues to grow a little stronger. Yeah, a measly 4% increase is what you're thinking, but the increase can only be coming from gaining back lost ground and getting new users. Baby steps, they may be, but they are steps up and not not down.

Jacky, Vista is being delayed for the same reasons you are having troubles now. Security issues. Security issues, Security issues. And the beat goes on...

Apple Reports Second Quarter Results
Revenue Grows 34 Percent Year-over-Year; Earnings Increase 41 Percent

CUPERTINO, California—April 19, 2006—Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2006 second quarter ended April 1, 2006. The Company posted revenue of $4.36 billion and a net quarterly profit of $410 million, or $.47 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $3.24 billion and a net profit of $290 million, or $.34 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 29.8 percent, equivalent to the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 43 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

Apple shipped 1,112,000 Macintosh® computers and 8,526,000 iPods during the quarter, representing 4 percent growth in Macs and 61 percent growth in iPods over the year-ago quarter.

“We’ve generated over $10 billion in revenue and almost $1 billion in earnings in the first half of fiscal 2006,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Our transition to Intel processors is going very well, and our music business just experienced another quarter of outstanding growth.”

“We’re very pleased to report the second highest quarterly sales in Apple’s history, resulting in year-over-year revenue growth of 34 percent and earnings growth of 41 percent,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “Looking ahead to the third quarter of fiscal 2006, we expect revenue of about $4.2 to $4.4 billion. We expect GAAP earnings per diluted share of about $.39 to $.43, including an estimated $.04 per share expense impact from non-cash stock-based compensation, translating to non-GAAP EPS of about $.43 to $.47.”

Michael, well piece of info indeed!:):):)

But you are right in a way, this is for the short term or short run only. When VISTA is up and running, it will be BOOM TOWN CHARLIE for Unclie Bill! Just think of it, every second that ticks is like hitting a JACKPOT for him over copyrights and pattented issues. It is just like before WinXP, there were Win2000(not so well received), WinMe(a failure IMO), and then later WinXP. I think VISTA might have problems now but I believe they are working them out.

I am not saying Mac is not good. But have you ever asked yourself and wonder, WHY PC users are still clinging on PC & waiting for VISTA? Why not swing to Mac instead? Yes no doubt that  there are many like you who had jumped the wagon, but there are millions around still remain faithful with PC.

Seriously, as a layman myself, I do not know why. But I know there must be a reason or reasons that people are staying put.

Well that's said, we just have to sit back and watch the "movie" to see its ending. .....:P:P:P
