oagaspar wrote:catalog case Chris, brought to my attention by another well respected micro brand owner, nuff said I hope, but think about it,a brand that you believe started out with a unique design all his own,who now builds an almost exact copy of a IWC Aquatimer?,,,, ....if you read the entire thread about the faulty OD Rolf received you will see that it took 5 mos for him to be satisfied by Carlos and it was only because of the forum pressure that he was satisfied at all...especially read what KenC wrote in that thread...most of you guys were not even around when these micros 1st came around and because they were paying Ernie on WUS they were protected and any ill type posts were removed by the admins...you guys also believe that Zixen or Zinex, whatever the brand is called now led his customers to believe he had to change his name because it sounded like Rolex...BS,it was a patented name infringement filed by Zinex Corp.... and it appears none of you were around,or refuse to remember when Joe/Zixen was showing off his new blueprints of his new design on WUS way back when he 1st started...only thing,it wasn't his,it was Pouls, owner of Korsbek and Poul went nuts over it,unfortunately another thread gone from WUS...Joe apologized, but Poul remains upset even today
oagaspar wrote:yes, catalog case and in its 1st form with the dual crown was a vintage IWC Aquatimer homage...or any of the dozen or so compressor cased watches of the 70's...later on was a design contest watch(the chrono version)...
Regarding the Poseidon...I don't think there is any question on the inspiration coming from the excellent IWC Aquatimer, but at the same time the Poseidon offers some very significant value for the dollar IMO. It is a well built watch and I enjoy mine a lot. (the IWC Aquatimer continues to be on my wish list)Please show me these specific designs that are truly unique only to Prometheus?...this new Poseidon is nothing more than a re-branded replica imho.
Regarding the Prometheus brand specifically, I've got to agree with Phil on this one...they have a number of Prometheus specific designs in the lineup along with designs inspired by or homages to some legendary great ones from the big brands. This seems to be the case for the majority of micros.
To say "no imagination" and "just copies" seems to be a bit harsh, but to each his own.
The Ocean Diver (available as a 3-hander, GMT, and the Chrono version) would be the first one that comes to mind as unique.
(maybe you are saying this is a catalog case, which would be unknown to me?)
for the most part all of the micros as Phil said have copied from some other brand and do nothing more than shift parts from a catalog from one design to the next... please don't get me started on the sister brand of Prometheus,Borealis, this brand is cheap from the get go...sharp edges on any watch brand turn me off... if you can't have at least a decent fit and finish than why bother...maybe revisiting this thread will open some eyes...
Well, I don't get your point Oscar. You say this is simply a catalog case, and note that a compressor style case is simply copying a bunch of vintage compressors from the 70's. Come on, one can still have something unique while following the basic compressor form.
I'm familiar with a number of catalog cases being used across the landscape, but I would say this is a case I haven't seen anywhere else. If this is a catalog case, I don't see any evidence of that.
I cannot comment on Borealis (did not know it was a sister brand, mainly because the designs don't appeal to me enough to learn anything about the brand). I do, however, have a few of their 22mm vulcanized rubber straps, and at $15 bucks a pop, they are a screaming deal IMO.
I skimmed your link on the OD...someone I don't know took the time to write this nicely detailed and long review, and despite a few minor niggles, he summarizes by saying he really likes his OD chronograph.
I only have 2 Prometheus watches, the Sailfish and Poseidon, and based on my experience with watches at a number of price points from micro to big brand, I still say that BOTH of these offer incredible bang for the buck. Fit/finish is great on both which, of course, is just my opinion...but I'm just sayin'.
...sometimes being around a long time doesn't help when trying to prove a point and that is why so many of the early, more knowledgeable WIS have left the forums.
I myself have pretty much had it and sometimes knowing too much is a hindrance when it comes to this hobby which is filled with secrets much as it was years ago and those lucky enough to know have become a bit of a endangered species having to meet in private fora in order to discuss the reality of what has become forums filled with experts who have only the knowledge that is fed to them through BS sales tactics, by the way too many micro marketeers, most of which have little to no watch experience upon contracting a Chinese manufacturer to tell them how to build a watch and when someone who has inside knowledge comes along to share some insight they are booed away...one of these days I hope all watch enthusiasts realize this, but if you continue to hang at WUS and whatever new forums spawn off of there, with the same uninformed WIS feeding you the same BS, I can't believe it will happen.
Well, I've apparently stepped on a very sensitive and historically energized topic. My apologies for that is all I can offer.
I don't drink Kool Aid, and I guess I will leave it at that.
