As some of you may remember I bought one of the Zeno Ti Pilot models a while back
(around the same time Marc started carrying them):

I did some searching and found one as cheap as I had seen since this model first came out. One of the consequences of the cheap price is that it had a day wheel in another language, not a problem as they are pretty easy to swap!

Today I finaly got around to swapping the day wheel and once I got the movement out of the case I could see that the glass was pretty well scratched up on the front and the display back. I know it didn't come new this way which means I have scratched it up just wearing it around the house! Now I realize that domed mineral glass is particularly vulnerable but even for mineral glass this stuff is really soft.

I am debating weather I should even bother to put it back together and just order some sapphire for it but I have to be honest and say I already paid way more for this than it was worth so spending any more is just money down the drain!

Keep in mind that the Ti bracelet that comes with this watch doesn't fit it well either. The end link on the bracelet rubs on the case behind the hollow end link and will eventually wear a decent mark in the case. (dremel is your friend!)

All in all this Zeno Pilot is a disappointing piece of crap. I can go buy two Hamilton Chronographs(with sapphire) for what the Zeno cost and at least with the Hamilton I'm getting the watch and movement straight from the manufacturer not a half wit third party brand like zeno who doesn't actually make anything for themselves.

I've had some Zeno's that I really liked this is not one of them! coyote2.gif

Ok not that I have ranted and raved about the poor quality mineral glass and bad bracelet I can say something nice about it.

It is a darn fine looking watch on the right Zulu strap! :P

There is still no place for poor quality domed mineral glass on a watch like this it really should be sapphire on the front at least. I will leave it in until it gets too bad to look at and then change it out for sapphire with AR, might as well do AR while the glass is out!

Interesting Chris....especially when hearing that Zeno's are widely replicated as posted on their site:shock: when I 1st saw this thread I thought that's what you would be talking about.

I was thinking the very same thing. I have no experience with Zeno (got one on order though), but I have yet to scratch a glass crystal even on my $100 Invicta's. And yes, I bang into things. Especially doornobs in the house (can't explain it).

So, I'm wondering about the pedigree of this particular Zeno. :? I do see the warnings on the Zeno site. It has got to have some degree of truth to it other than to protect their dealers, etc.

Well anything is possible!
I am aware of Zeno's "claims" of counterfeiting but given that they are really not a big enough brand name to interest counterfeiters I am still inclined to believe that what is really behind that is Zeno trying to protect their brick and mortar distribution chains from low ball Grey market sales.

Zeno makes subtle changes to their models from year to year so if you really want to be honest about authenticity you can't guarantee it's real without walking into the front doors at Zeno watch basel and buying direct from them. One of the problems with being small is you can't be consistent in your designs from year to year because you have to rely on other manufacturers to produce the parts for you.

If it had been a stainless steel three hander I might be more suspicious of its authenticity but I bought this through an established EU dealer and it is a genuine 7750 with a Zeno signed rotor and the quality and fit and finish of everything else is definitely Zeno right down to the high quality gaskets that are used in it so I am pretty sure this is just a case of "Genuine" stupidity.

I have been racking my brain trying to remember doing something stupid with it that would have scratched it but I am pretty sure it's been in my display box and on my workbench and that is it. I don't scratch watch crystals either usually. The last time I damaged a watch crystal it was welding slag in the shop and that is technically not a scratch ;)

In defence of Zeno's reputation the watch doesn't say on it that it is sapphire and most brands will brag about it if it is so It's not like I was mislead or anything only supprised by how fragile the it really is!

Crow...this may sound like a stupid question (especially since you are so well versed in watch technology), but since both of my ZENO watches came with acrylic crystals (which they seem to us a lot of)...could it be that it is acrylic and that a quick glance you simply assumed it was mineral?

Ken
Skipdog is correct it's mineral front and back.
I'm familiar with the acrylic stuff, my Zeno army diver is acrylic.
On the plus side since it is mineral the scratches will buff out with a little work.
I don't have a lot of domed glass watches so it may just be that I need to learn to be more careful with it! I'm just spoiled with all the sapphire I've got!
