As a newbie watch 'collector', I was wondering.... What were your reasons for ordering this timepiece? I think it is a terrific looking watch. I like the band. The blue dial is really cool. What are your thoughts and reasons behind your decison?

I think you listed the reasons! Awesome case, 1000m water resistant, miyota automatic movement, great looking hands and dial, huge thick bracelet. What more could you ask for considering the cost?? Rob

You are correct. However, as the most I have ever spent on a watch (to date) is the $200 I paid for my Monster, and before that the $100 I paid for my solar G-shock, to me $399 is a lot of clams. I am still learning all the lingo, technology, etc. Knives, those I know. Why various companies make a better product. Why hand-made is usually better when compared to factory products. And on and on. I do not have the same tech savvy with the watches. So far, my choices have been based on a certain desire (such as a solar or automatic) or appearance.

Let's see... yes, here are a few reasons to go with a Barracuda at this price 1. the Benarus Barracuda is a limited edition of 100. 2. It utilizes an awesome watch case which is mostly used by more expensive watch companies 3. It is a 1000m diver 4. it is an automatic with a trustworthy workhorse of a movt. 5. a great bracelet w/two different clasps (signed) 6. unique combo of blue carbon fiber dial and "Benrus Type I" style hands 7. Helium release valve 8. signed crown 9. orange minute hand 10. custom second hand 11. Crystal is sapphire - 4 mm thick w/ inside AR coating shall I go on??? watch2.gif

Thank you, sir! That is exactly the kind of information I was looking for. As a newbie, I honestly do not know what half the stuff you mentioed means, but, thanks to the miracle of Mr. Gore's internet, I can look it all up! I had no idea that the same cases were used by different companies. 'Helium release valve' is something I have run across in other postings. Have no clue, but it sounds cool. Every day I learn a little bit more. I did catch the 'limited edition' part, which appeals to me. If they only make 100, chances are I am not going to run into another one, unless I meet up with one of you guys. I think that's cool.

I just looked, and you have one reserved. That says something; you obviously think it's a good deal for yourself.

a little info on those strange helium release valves: A helium release valve, or helium escape valve, as it is also called, is a feature found on some diving watches. It provides functionality for professional divers operating at great depths for prolonged periods of time. When commercial divers operate at great depths, they often spend prolonged hours in diving bells under pressure breathing a gas mix like hypoxic trimix or similar, that contain the gas helium. Since helium molecules are the second smallest found in nature, the gas is able to work its way inside the watch, around any o-rings or other seals the watch may feature. This isn't a problem as long as the divers stay under pressure, but when they resurface, the helium inside the watch starts to expand quicker than it can escape, leading to an increase in pressure inside the watch. This can cause great damage to the watch, even making the crystal pop off. To prevent this, Rolex and Doxa S.A. invented the helium escape valve in the 1960's. This is a small, one-way valve, usually featuring a screw-down crown on the side of the watch. When the diver starts to ascend he or she simply unscrews the crown to the full open position, allowing any helium that may have been trapped inside the watch housing to escape. Usually used in a dry environment (inside a diving bell or in a saturation chamber), the fact that the valve is one-way also means that it can be opened while the watch (and diver) is submerged. Helium release valves are primarily found on diving watches featuring depth resistance greater than 300 m (1000 ft). Models that feature a helium release valve include most of the Omega Seamaster series, Rolex Sea Dweller, some dive watches from the Citizen Watch Co., Ltd and select Doxa Models. Isn't wikipedia great!!!

I'd say I'm a collector of unique or rare watches, over so-called "fine watches" (though I do have a couple that exceed $2k), I truly enjoy the watches that are the end-result of one man's (or woman's) dream, ala Orsa, Boschett, Benarus, Dievas, etc... The watch companies I mentioned above beat the odds, and we are a part of that success—pretty cool huh?

As others have said Roo, I liked the details of the watch, especially the case. The Barracuda is my first 1,000 meter diver and I thought it looked like a great deal. Now that I have the watch, I can find nothing to fault. I've never had a real high end watch so it's tough for me to compare the Barracuda to a Rolex, Omega, Doxa, etc. It's easy to compare the price though, and I think this watch is a steal. This is a really heavy watch and I have mine on the bracelet on which it was mounted upon arrival. It's quite comfortable. I've had mine since Tuesday (today is Saturday) and I've been wearing it to the exclusion of others to give it time to break in. So far, so good.
