It does not take a great camera (a 35mm compairs to a 5 megapixle) as much as it does a good operator, with a basic understanding of light.  I carry a $300 dollar fuji 4.2 meg. digital slr with 10x optical zoom (fuji S 5100).  My avitar was taken with a minox that is a great advanced no frills nothing automatic tuff as nails camera.  No I was not in an inclosure.  The plastic casses that cameras have now are more than likely stronger cameras.  Just have not dropped one out of a tree yet to find out.  Digital is a great format because you have instant feed back on what you did or didnot do correctly.  Mathematics and Physics is the study of all of this be it watches, cameras, or falling out of a tree trying to get a picture of a bat I almot broke my arm to get that shot.

PS the back ground is a man made  blind for reasearch.  They called the engineers in when they coud not get the low thread count hemp fabric covered in epoxy resin to shed the water off.  It rained there every day and there equipment kept getting wet.  It was just a funny situation.
