Hi Tom, After many years of storage it sounds like the gasket that fits inside the back cover has deteriorated and has now seized itself onto the watch. This would explain the difficulty of removing the back. When you do take your Caravelle into servicing,also ask to retest the watch for water resistancy. This would insure many more years of enjoyment. Another nice timepiece with even more historical value. Cheers, Simon
