I'm on-shore mostly but I understand the point of the divers who work on oil-rigs.


I am not a diver ... so I am curious - while I agree that drilled lugs are a lot sturdier and would be less prone to breaking - I am trying to understand what would happen if the pins broke or fell out? (I was alarmed about the life/death thing, but couldn't figure out if it was hyperbole or simple fact. And if fact, what would the danger be? I am not trying to be inflammatory, I am genuinely curious - as on a trek losing a compass or GPS could make it much more dangerous if you had trouble reckoning via sun or stars - esp. if it was overcast and night)
