Yep, the engines are pretty powerful. Linking waterskiing with time, competition boats have a GPS based speed control that is far more sophisticated than the ones in cars. It samples speed 20 times per second to compensate for any pull variance from the skier and adjust speed. At 55 KPH (34.2 MPH), the exact time to go thru the competition course (259 m) is 16.95 seconds. The system keeps the time almost always @ 16.95 and never below 16.94 or over 16.96, regardless of how strong the skier is, wind, etc...
