As far as I know standard gun bluing won't work on stainless steel. Caswell Plating makes a stainless blackening gel. I've used it on a few gun parts; but I don't know how well it wears.

Thanks, Nate. This is very helpful. I think the 316L of watches and the coarser iron grade content of the steel for gun parts may be the difference. I will surely research on your assist pass.
