I just got my Orsa Monstrum exactly one week ago.

I do not have pictures so please tell me I need them and the usual comments that this is all useless. In all seriousness my camera is down and until I can get it working I still felt motivated to write about my Orsa.

I find there to be a lot of lop sided opinions on Orsa. Kind of love and hate relationship.

My opinion has been one of surprise and enjoyment. I guess I was expecting the worst, specially since I won mine on e-bay with a low best offer price. I thought I may get one from the bottom of the pile.

When I got my watch it arrived in 6 business days or just over 10 days since I placed my order. Not bad from Canada. My watch arrived in a padded envelope and inside was a soft nylon case with my watch carefully wrapped inside. There was a signed card with a 12 month gaurantee.

Packaging was adequate and protected my watch in transit which is all that really matters to me. I would prefer a box, even cardboard like Seiko over the nylon but not a big issue for me. Still looks professional and nice.

The watch,

The Case. It is a monster and a deep bead blast surface which seems very well finished. I noticed two blemishes on the case that were very minor and most would not even see. Considering the cost of this watch I find the case to be very well made and much larger than most in its price range. I am not sure of the actual dimensions but over 46mm without the crown. I have been wearing the watch for a week now and despite its size it is for most activities very comfortable. Overall nice hefty case with nice thick lugs. The screwed in lugs stick out and I do not mind this. They do not snag on anything and as an advantage over countersunk is the ability to tape off the case and unscrew the lug screws without ever getting close to scratching the case. A very common problem I see on watches with this system. I like the case and size, comfortable but big!!

The Crystal: Love it or hate it on this one. This is one huge dome. I am talking the dome of domes when it comes to sapphire. O.K. I have never had a watch with a larger dome than my Zeno 300m diver with a acrylic crystal. The dome on this watch is serious. I love it. It distorts the dial view like crazy at certain angles which can be annoying. I think it just depends o if you like dome crystals and can live with the distortion. I like the effect myself. I will say I can also see a blue reflection at certain angles and lighting which tells me there is an anti-reflective coating on this crystal. So even if you hate the distortion something has to be said about having a 5.5 mm domed anti-reflective sapphire crystal on a sub $300 automatic watch!

The Bezel: The big problem with this watch. One of my only two complaints is the shiny bezel. As others have said it clashes too much with the case and a bead blast finish to this bezel would look awesome and it should be that way. That being said the bezel does not feel cheap. It has a solid positive grip and turns rather precisly. It has a little play and is 60 clicks but it lines up perfectly at 12 0'clock which is one of the most important aspects of a bezel to me. If the bezel was blasted I would give it hi marks. The insert is not the best but I do not hate it. Bezel feels solid and good to me.

The Dial: The dial on the Orsa is one of its strong points but is also where its second biggest weakness lies. The big weakness Lume. Says luminova but the hands on mine glow like a champ for about 15 minutes and after 20 or so they are gone!! The dial last a little longer but isn't much better. Whatever they are using it is not Luminova or at leat they are not using it right. I would STRONGLY reccomend improvement here. Good C3 lume could really improve this watch!!I love the design of both the hands and dial of the Monstrum. I think the design elements of the dial and hands are what attract most to the watch and I have to say I agree. The orange on the dial is a very nice deep orange. I love it in the minute tracks around the dial. The rest of the dial is a silver/white dial that glows in certain lighting. It is really a unique effect. The dial is not white but it is not silver either. The dial is flawless. Not a spec of lint or dust anywhere I can see even with a high power flashlight. Date at 4 o'clock is a nice touch. Not too much lettering which I like and no where does it pretend to made where it is not. It does not say Japanese movt. or Canada, etc, I really get bothered by a lot of the new companies that say they are German or something else when the only thing German is the company if you are lucky!

The Movement: A miyota 8200. An awesome movement. Hand winds, not hackable. low beat movement. Built like a tank and mine has been about 15 or so seconds fast a day out the box. Not bad and will get better. I think if the Miyota is adjusted can be just as accurate as many more expensive swiss brothers but with less service needs. An excellent choice for a diver!

Note: a lot of people have complained about a noisy rotor or movement. The Miyota makes noise. I had a Citizen Ti diver with the same movement and it made more noise. The large case of the Monstrum actually dampens the sounds a bit!

The Crown: At four o'clock is another nice touch. It was just a little rough at first and now it is like butter. No not really, but it works just fine. Easy to grip and turn, screws down just fine.

The CaseBack: A Giant Squid crushing a Submarine. Pretty cool looking caseback. Nice attention to detail. Deep engraving and done very well. Art really.

Deployment strap with solid rubber end links. It works and is comfortable. I had trouble sizing it but no worries there. I think I would have preferred a nice thick leather strap with orange accents or contrast stitching or just a plain thick silicone dive strap without the end links. I would REALLY PREFER a BRACELET!! I have heard a lot of rumors but nothing real. It would really be nice to have a bracelet for this watch!!

In all a very nice package for the price. With the addition of the Benarus and few others with nice watches at good prices I still feel the Orsa Monstrum offers a lot of value. The design on the Orsa is more original and it does not pretend to be something else.

So I for one would like to dispell a lot of bad PR that I have heard about Orsa. I had good service. Responses can be slow but you will get a reply. I enjoy my Monstrum very much and am surprised I can wear such a large watch. I have had others in this size range that I could not make work. To me, that says something about the design!!

Rob

It is just my honest opinion of the Orsa. It seems a lot of people here only see the positive side and when I go to other forums I felt a strong bias against Orsa.

I wanted to present a balanced non-biased view. I think I did.

I do not hate the strap either I would just prefer another. It is comfortable.

All in all a great watch!

Rob
