Wasn't sure where to put this, but since fine cigars and quality whiskey seem to go together, I thought I'd mention this stuff. I'd never had it before and saw it at the liquor store today and thought I'd try it. It was in the same price range as a similar sized bottle of Woodford Reserve and Makers Mark(my regular drinks), so I thought 'why not?'. I must say that I'm pleasantly surprised at how smooth it is and intend purchase this stuff again. So, all you single malt guys out there should give it a try.

Thanks Murphy J. I am a fan of Macallan, Laphroig, Lagavaulin, Talisker and Glenfarclass myself. With all those price points, I tend to veer towards those not more than 12 years old.

Tonight, I'm opening a new bottle of Glendronach. Haven't tried it yet but I was told it's a good one.

Thanks for the tip. I'll hunt this down.subtlelaugh.gif

Oscar, that's a good one. hand6.gif I usually take Glenmorangie 12 whenever it's my turn at the barbie. My sons have the beer while papa goes for the firewatersubtlelaugh.gif. Somehow the cherry flavor down the throat and smoke up the nose from the ribs and fish blend bestsubtlelaugh.gif.

Do you drink it straight? I usually add 2 to 3 drops of water for every shot to open up the flavor.

A single malt thread! Cool! ThumbsUp02.gif

I was just talking to my buddy just the other day how it appears that many WIS are also big fans of single malts. I was converted to the joys of Islay whiskeys a few years ago and I'm a big fan of Laphroaig, Lagavulin, and Ardbeg. Just love the smokiness and peatiness of the Islays, but it really is an acquired taste. I've been unsuccessful in making a convert out of my buddy :D

Slainte!

If you like Lagavaulin, try out Talisker and Macallan 12 year olds. They are way too good for the money:)

Yeahhhhhhhhhhhh..........that's a good, smooth one but at 18 years old, it's too much out of reach. I like a little sting on the throat and 12 years is the sweet spot for me in terms of great, lasting taste.

Now, if the Cubans were rolled on thighs of young maidens, that would be perfectsubtlelaugh.gif

True story... I manage a property in downtown Chicago. Across the hall from me, a tenant moved out after the CEO passed away. She was the lone employee and said that anything left behind could be taken. There was crap everywhere, mostly completely useless. Buried in an armoire, I found a bottle of Ballantine 30 Year Blended Scotch. I did some research and found that the latest it was blended was 1955, meaning the latest it had been bottled was 1985. My wife (then fiancee) and I wondered what we would celebrate with on our wedding day (after our wine toast). the taste was unbelievable. Considered one of the best blends made, ever, from what I have read. Well, to top off this story, I found out that the bottle was worth $800! And lo and behold, behind the pile of books in the back of the armoire was a 2nd bottle. It's in my liquor cabinet, waiting.

Mcallan 12 yr old is one of my favorites right now. Dalwhinnie is another favorite of mine,I seem to lean towards the sherry barrel aged scotch. Nice and smooth.

Brian, I know what you mean about the cherry barrel. Now, try Laphroig....not expensive at all but man does it carry a wallop. You'll not like it at first but after a few ounces, you'll never forget the taste of the earth.......yahoo.gifyahoo.gifyahoo.gif. I'm rationing my last 2 bottles and told my sons to stay awayoh my.gifthe stuff and keep it for this grumpy, old fart.

brp,

I tried Laphroig at a pipeshow and just couldnt get to like it. For some reason it tasted like medicine to me.

I do like Glenrothes though too, also some Dalmore cigar malt (no longer made I hear) isnt too bad either.

Brian, try it again. I also didn't like it the first time I tried it. It tasted like whisky scraped from the soil....but that's exactly why it is so unforgettable a taste...yahoo.gifOnly after the 3rd try did I get to like it. Now, I always have a little in stock.

Hey guys, good to know a lot of you like the good things in life, besides watches, that is.
Myself, lately I've been getting into the very good bourbons like Makers Mark, etc.
I guess it depends on what's available when I check out my local liquor store.
On the subject of Cigars, what do you guys like?
Lately I got a box of Indian Tabac robustos, and after a long time good old Henry Clay's robustos, they're still smooth as ever.
Here in Canada, we do have Cubans, and I seem to find them so harsh that I usually stick to Dominican, Honduran, etc.
Cheers.

Just bought a bottle of the Glenrothes for a fishing trip & couldn't resist sampling when I got it home.  Fantastic!!

I had to force myself to put it away. ThumbsUp02.gif

I'll have to try the others in this thread too.

That's great, Nate! I'd suggest you try and get past the might goalkeeper of single malts.........Laphroig......muddy and earthy taste. Very hard to forget. Very easy to remember.

If you can get past that, you'll love single malts like crazy.bamby.gif
