A new quartz eta is in development I learned from Tim Temple hand6.gif
In other Swiss news, I’ve just received word from Swiss ETA that a new movement is in development. Look for the rollout of a new X80 family of quartz movements late this year. Among the improvements in this movement is the unification of the height of the day/date display to 3.65mm in men’s and 2.95mm in women’s. The movement also features a simplified crown assembly and a fourth wheel with 60 teeth, up from the current 49. ETA is saying this new engine series will sell for “an attractive price.” I’ll continue investigating at the Basel Watch Fair.

Ok.  Let me get this straight - new diameter and 11 teeth added to the 4th wheel, simplified crown assembly and unified height to day-date.  Sounds like 2 of the 4 are cost savings for the manufacturer not necessarily improvements for the user.

I don't see which 2 you would consider "cost effective" as all of the changes add cost to the movement....This movement is so new that eta hasn't released any info to the public ...Tims relationship with eta gives him certain "heads up" hand6.gif I will ask TT when I speak with him next about what the changes mean but from what my guess would be a quartz movement much like a chronomter grade eta quartz which would have a sweeping second hand instead of the tick, tick one most of us see now....Eric Avery would probably know more as to what these improvements and additional teeth would do for the quartz movementwatch2.gif Ok.  Let me get this straight - new diameter and 11 teeth added to the 4th wheel, simplified crown assembly and unified height to day-date.  Sounds like 2 of the 4 are cost savings for the manufacturer not necessarily improvements for the user.
