Thanks Steve!

Gees you make me laugh :)

How do you think I felt driving in the US - as far as I was concerned - it was all of you that were on the wrong side. And yes - the first time I tried to get into a car in the US I went to the driver's side, and I was meant to be a passenger...  d'oh!

This 540i has been chipped to 265kW - I don't know what that is in bhp, but it is terrific fun, and it gets some track work every now and then - when I feel like buying new tyres, voiding my insurance, and letting the inner hairy beast off the leash for a while.

I just did a deal in South Africa and I will have to go there soon. In SA they make those Superformance Shelby Daytona Cobra replicas with Roush 427 motors. But from what I see and read, the new Shelby GT500KR from the US might be a nice ride, too. I have always preferred V8s and the way they drive. How about you?

I should have been born in the US...

Have a good day!  IanM

Ian, I have often wondered what it would feel like to sit on the other side and drive. I am a Jeep enthusiast and have often thought about trying to find an old Postal Jeep just for the experience. If they were 4WD I would of bought one a long time ago. Even if I did find one I really doubt many would appreciate me zipping down the highway on the wrong side of the road into oncoming traffic .

Hi IW

Tuners here tend to quote kW figures at the crank, not at the rear wheels. 350bhp ey? Not bad... no wonder it goes quick!

Here's a few more for you to convert. Standard car has 210kW at the crank, and has 400Nm of torque at 4000rpm. What is that in foot/pounds?

Fuel consumption is 14.4 litres / 100 klms in city and 8.2 litres / 100 kilometres in highway mode. MPG?

0 to 100 kph in about 5 seconds flat (when the clutch is bedded in) and it has been derestricted to go to about 290kph (the standard car is restricted to 250).

Now - if you could put THAT into terms that my US-based WIS buddies can understand, it would be great! Otherwise, it must be like I am speaking another language...

Enjoy the day and thanks for the response! IanM

Hi Steve

There a a few Jeeps here for sale - I follow them a little because my father and uncle were servicemen and they get nostalgic. And of course, with so much red dirt and unsettled land in the centre of Australia, they dream of being able to "go bush" in something that is inbreakable.

Prices here for good WWII Jeeps vary a lot, but a reasonable one in "as last used" condition is going to set you back about $15000 AUD. Project cars come in a lot less than that. Time warp ones can go as high as $25000 AUD.

The experience of driving "on the wrong side of the road" :) is certainly weird - but only until you get used to it. It took me a day or two to get my brain to recognise that I was not just on the wrong side of the car, I was on the other side of the road. If you drive a RHD car in a LHD country, it is MUCH easier to come to terms with.

Interestingly, in Western Australia we can register and drive LHD cars without the need to convert them. I have driven a few LHD cars on our roads here and it is easy - but off-putting when you are on the left hand side of the car, and the kerb is just outside your window...

Jeeps occasionally appear here - here is a link to one available now for about 10K AUD - and it is LHD!

If the link doesn't work - go to: http://www.carsales.com.au , private seller , and in the search engine keyword just put in "1941".

And if you want a hand looking for anything like that here - please advise and I am happy to assist.

Have a terrific day! IanM

Hi Paxman - you are right - life should be about fun, doing what you enjoy, and hurting as few people as you can while doing it!

I figured out that the conversion is:

(nett money spent x how good it makes you feel) = who cares what anyone else thinks as long as you enjoy it!:D

I hope this week is a good one for you! hand6.gif

Hi Paxman

Yes - this is a 1995/6 model, with all the good and bad that implies! Our 2008 model M5 still has this feautre too.

Fuel metering gauge (called an econometer in  BMW-speak) is at the bottom of the rev counter on this model. Its amazing how quickly the thing zips from the normal  to the startospheric (8 litres/100ks when I am on the freewey, to beyond 30 litres/100kilometres when I push it)!

Even more fun is to set the trip computer to "what's left in the tank" mode. It tells you how far you can go before it runs out of gas. That is more scary, because it calculates "on the fly". I have often started a trip with 200 kilometres to go, only to have the computer tell me 50 kilometres down the road that I have about 20 kilometres of travel left. Damned right foot...

Have a great one!

IanM
