I purchase what I like, or what works given the operational conditions.

I purchase watches to mark events.  I purchase sets in order to build relationships between team members and to help build relationships between people that have little in common.

I live my life under one rule if you can have anything in life what would it be?  For me it is a $40 Victorinox chrono., Orient day date diver, or a Seiko.

Where's the coupon?  Couldn't see it.

Might be tricky since I just told my wife about the Blue Monstrum and PloProf pre-orders ;-)

But a coupon....now that would help.

Every WIS individual has different set of rules in buying watches. And here are my five basic rules in buying a watch.

1. Automatic/Manual winding(prefarably swiss ETA based movement)

2. Brushed/satin finished case

3. Not less than 40mm in case diameter

4. Sapphire crystal

5. And it should be within my price range

I used to own some QUARTZ watches(mostly CHRONO) and other watches that do not fall into these criteria and ended up selling them all. So, now I am trying to strictly follow these rules to avoid losing $:(

Good luck on your decision...

I am keen to get other folks opinion on this....

When I started collecting watches, I set myself some rules about what would go into my collection.  My main rules were:

Rule 1: only watches that have a significant emotional impact on me (and others), that I would wear on a regular basis (not watches that are valuable to the market but not wearable by me....I am not a speculator or trader)
Rule 2: nothing less than 40mm case size
Rule 3: nothing goes out (I have never sold a watch - only a significant change in my financial situation or what 'does it for me' would force me to sell something)
Rule 4: no quartz movements (this is connected to craftmanship, the need for care, uniqueness etc.)

So far I have been able to expand my collection happily and stay within these 'rules'.  But..........I am increasingly finding that there are watches that meet Rules 1 & 2 but violate Rule 4!  Actually it was Mark's Ocean7 G-2  over on 'New Arrivals' that finally prompted me to seriously question Rule No. 4.

I am guessing that most people are guided most by somethign like my Rule 1, but I would be really interested in other people's collecting 'rules' and specifically.....give me some arguments to help me convince myself that 'quartz is OK' .........so that I can buy a G-2!

Not my shot, borrowed from the O7 forum.  Sorry, forgot to mention that.

Here you go... it is in this thread. There are some "rules" that go along with using the coupon. http://forums.watchuseek.com/showthread.php?t=76895

Great read here...

I agree with CJ in that life has too many bloody rules already. As others have stated, buy what you like and can afford.

I have preferences which I am sure will change over time.

I prefer and auto/mechanical watch.

I prefer sapphire crystals.

Other than that almost anything can catch my attention. I had a heavy predilection for divers but I have seen that change over the last year...

I could care less what others thing of my watch(es) as long as I enjoy them...
