CNN short article the state of the Swiss watch exports

Down 4.9% which in it's self is not a big deal given the recent gains, but it is news none the less.  A book can be written about why but I will just post the article.

I've been watching the news related to this area also. Once the US Dollar dose it's rebound I wonder just how much of a effect it will have on this the first few months.

Skip I'm starting to wonder if the $ is going to regain its lustre... You are almost lucky not to be driving these days... I am happy I'm not a chain smoking OTR driver... it would be getting tough.mistake.gif

And Avery, write the book. I'm down for a copy! Dotcha' think the prior year's phenomenal growth makes this news a mere inconvenience in the big picture for the Swiss watch makers?

Okay...guys, gas was $030 a gallon when I was making $75 a week...it is still relatively inexpensive compared to purchasing power.  Sit back and relax, the Swiss are about to implode again as they did when the quartz watch was introduced.  They are now trying to destroy themselves by raising the Swiss Made "standard" to 80%...that will destroy most of the companies as most are having cases, braclets, etc. manufactured in Asia...even SWATCH is doing it...few will be able to retain the Swiss Made label...and we won't care, because the Japanese, Chinese, et al will surpass them in quality...

As far as imploding I doubt it will happen as before that was due to market pressures of a different sort.  Let the dollar stay where it is and the Chinese will be thinking about decoupling form the dollar and so will Saudi Arabia. The bonds that we sold China are a hole different issue.

As far the drop it really does not matter all that much due the fact of the gains and the fat in the watch industry even in Switzerland is to high.  I do not think that the Chinese are about to pass up Omega or the other brands that The Swatch Group are trying to protect, and raise the prestige of.

The drop is due to a combination of week dollar, also the drop in the production of Swiss movements, people holding onto the movements so that they have them for the new production released in Basel, and etc.

Another factor affecting all this is that the price of steel has been up to. But I caught the tail end of something about US Steel intending to roll out more to fix that issue soon.

Steal is an issue with way the Chinese have been buying it to do the Olympic thing.

The thing that I think is great news about the decline is there is to much fat in the Swiss watch industry.  They need to tighten up there ship.

Easter did make a difference because of the 2 days lost in the month, but we can wait and see the April numbers.

Ask Microsoft about the Vista role out, every industry needs corrections.
