this is one Awesome understated watch imhohand6.gif

Apr 23, 2008

At SIHH 2008 Jaeger-LeCoultre presented two new limited edition models as a tribute to one of the greatest 20th century sports watches - the legendary Memovox Polaris models that joined the horology world in the 1960s. The initial Memovax Polaris watches developed for divers enjoyed great success, having incorporated innovative alarm mechanisms.

New Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox Tribute to Polaris watches have inherited the distinctive design, energetic lines and spirit of performance of the original Memovox Polaris of 1965, and the Memovox Polaris of 1968. The 42mm case demonstrates a luxurious polish.

Your gazed will be immediately captured by 3 crowns: the first crown is necessary for setting the alarm, the second for winding the watch and setting the time, while the third allows to govern the internal rotating bezel.

The vintage-inspired matte-finished black dial is completed with wedge-shaped luminous hour markers. The central rotating section of the dial indicates the setting of the alarm mechanism, in coordination with the arrow. You will notice the date display at 3 o'clock.

The Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox Tribute to Polaris watches have accommodated a Jaeger-LeCoultre in-house movement - the Calibre 956, entirely crafted, assembled and decorated by hand. The 7.45mm-thick 23-jewel self-winding movement, composed of 268 parts, incorporates a balance wheel alternating 28,800 times per hour. The central winding rotor is placed on ceramic bearings, requiring no lubrication. The movement offers 45-hour power reserve.

A unique feature of the Calibre 956 is the alarm mechanism, with a hanging gong system able to generate optimal volume of sound. The movement is protected beneath a one-of-a-kind double-case-back system guaranteeing 200-meter water resistance.

The engraved outer case-back is based on a system of 16 holes, a characteristic of the original Memovox Polaris watch. The system is used for enhancing the acoustic performance of the gong when the timepiece is pressed against a diving wetsuit.

The new Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox Tribute to Polaris watches both have convex crystals produced from a synthetic material, with profile matching the one of their 1960s predecessors. The watches go on a patterned leather strap fitted with a pin-style buckle in stainless steel or platinum.

The platinum Memovox Tribute to Polaris 1965 watch with dauphine-shaped hands is being created in a limited edition of 165 pieces. The stainless steel Memovox Tribute to Polaris 1968 watch with slender baton-shaped hands is being created in a limited edition of 768 pieces.

both the JL and Longines are re-editions/tributes to watches they produced in the 60's....many other companies have released similar vintage watches to honor their earlier counterparts....Bretling with the 46mm vintage,Blanpain fifty fathoms...seems to be a trend I likecool10.gif

I have seen the in-house JL cal. 956 movement in a watch locally. Let's just say the Memovox needs an exhibition back - it is a gorgeous thing!

Who wouldn't be proud to own one of these? And IMHO much more wearable than the soon-to-be-released Omega Ploprof reissue, which goes for about 9k USD.

I think this one as a 42mm would wear larger than the BPFF reissue because it is like an "all dial". Y'all know how much I like sloping inner chapter rings, that great satin black dial finish and those cool "compressor" crowns. Three matching ones - gotta love that. Add an alarm function and you've got a very characterful watch. This one is definitely lust-worthy. I would choose my own strap, though - that tire tready number isn't doing it for me.

What a nice post, O. Thanks for sharing - it is a beautiful watch. But I still want to know where they put the hanging gong...  or does it somehow connect directly to your 'nads and give 'em a shake??? ;)

Have a great day all! IanMhand6.gif

The JLC Memovox Tribute to Polaris is simply stunning. I wish it wasn't a limited edition run. Maybe JLC will follow Blancpain's example with the Fifty Fathoms and have an unlimited edition run sometime in the future.
