They denoted different "lines" of increasing quality/spec on some Zodiac watche sin the early 80s timeframe... I think red was the top "professional" level, and have seen silver, gold, and blue as well.  (But am not sure of their order -- google it up!)

Found this on WUS.  If you look at Hamx15 about 2/3 tha way down it gives some good info about the dots...
