As Pax said the Tachymeter measures time over a known distance (average speed).  One easy example is; when driving start the stopwatch function at a mile marker on a highway and then stop it at the next mile marker.  The stopwatch function "second hand" will be pointing (usually the numbers are located on the edge of the dial)  at your average speed for the one mile you just drove ie; for 65 mph the hand will be pointing at the number 65 (a little before the 11 position).  I hope this helps and didn't just confuse you so much that you'll never own a chronograph.

Stormin',

I've got my eye on only one chrono: Omega Speedmaster.  It went to the moon ya know.  And since I'm lost in space half the time, it would really come in handy. :D

The other half I'm at work.:(
