How's the quality of the Russian diving watches when compared to both the Japanese and the Swiss divers (or, for that matter, to the small boutique watchmakers like Kobold or Benarus)? Just curious, as I see many out there.

Like everything else depends on the brand. Some are flat out junk and some are rather wel built.

Yes, there is a lot a variation under that umbrella.

You get these:

And then those with a little stronger build. Do you have anything more specific in mind?:D

Well, there's a lot of stuff on Russia2all.com, like the Vostok-Europe diving watches. They seem like they're pretty inexpensive, so I'm wondering what the catch is...

let's put it simple....I don't know anyone who would dive with a Russian watch on their wrist :D....now if it's only aesthetics that interests you than buy what you like, especially if you don't dive hand6.gif

I would agree that actually diving or snorkling is a bit iffy.. Around town wearing the majority s/b OK for years of wear..I have a Vostock just cause I like the specific look.

I usually buy what I like and am not always looking for a tool watch. Some of these are not bad (at least on the 'net), but I'm always a bit leery when something is so inexpensive.

Well I'm not certain if your are trying to be obtuse as you could easily drop a picture or a link to whatever it is that had caught your eye and you would get a number of opinions. As it is you seem to be talking of Vostok Europe watches as seen on R2A.com and again that leaves a large sampling. You mentioned their divers and I am only aware of one model which has a WR of 200m.

So in answer to the question in the broad generalities it was posed in I would say the Russian watches are less expensive because they are Russian.;)

My experience with the VE watches has been good and I own a Expedition 2006 and have owned the K3. The movements were non-hacking, reliable and fairly accurate thought he lack of a true quickset date is somewhat bothersome. Fit and finish were very good. Nice dial work. Lume was perhaps a little weak. That's my experience with the VEs.toon1.gif

BTW, I drove by an R8 Friday. Looked bitchin'.yourock.gif

Great point on the link. Here's what I was looking at that caused me to send my initial posting:

http://www.russia2all.com/vostok-europe-russian-watch-watches/

The one I'm looking at is the Ekranoplan Sea Monster (not sure which specific case or dial as yet).

Thanks for your insight on the ones you own. That helps a ton.

VE's seem to be getting better. I've owned many over the past 2 years. Not a problem with one of them.

I like this one!!

that is the Caspian Sea Monster... it is 20 ATM and intended to be used as an actual dive watch....  not just for looks.  You wouldn't deep dive with it, but at 20 ATM it can handle scuba and such.  It's sturdy and with the tritium tubes, lume is not a problem... the unidirectional bezel action is very smooth as well.  hope this helps!
