OK my fellow WIS, with tax return season (and Mardi Gras season) around the corner, a little extra money may come my way. So here is my conundrum: One watch purchase(probably for the whole year) - DOXA or Oris? Model: 1000T, 1200T, 800Ti, diver's Titan date? Lemme hear it. Stuart

Stuart, Oris is a great brand and very respected in the arena of mechanical watches but for your type of job, it's a no brainer to go DOXA. They are just so well-made and sturdy!;)

This is not an easy choice Stuart...Oris have great watches and so does Doxa. Hummmm, well that's a fun dilemma! On a personal taste, even if a like both brands, I have a preference for the Doxa too. :D As for the model, I like the 1000 professional and Sharkhunter and my favorite is probably the GMT, in any colors. Good luck with your selection!

I found out about the 1200T from WUS. It's not on their, Doxa's, website. A little thicker case with a built in HRV. Slight difference in the dial from the 1000T, and it has the thicker 750T GMT bracelet. I'm really leaning that way, but it's gotta be ORANGE! Stu

Having owned both Oris and Doxa divers, I have to say Doxa, hands down. The Oris is very nice, but just about everything on the Doxa seems a bit nicer. It's just an iconic dive watch with close to a cult-like following. The 1200T looks super sweet, and not quite the monster the 5000T is. Also, Doxa's seem to hold their value a bit better, if that matters to you. I've taken a beating every time I've unloaded an Oris.

Well you are thinking straight wanting to make sure it is orange if it is a Doxa. I've just acquired the Oris you mention and have both a Doxa 750T Pro COSC and a 750GMT Caribbean. I'll sort of echo what Mark (captobvious) has already said with a disclaimer. The Doxa is a touch nicer but I don't think it in necessarily built of finished any better. I think its more appealing due to the design cues and overall "sturdiness" of the watch. A Doxa always will retain its value better than an Oris which is undervalued and can typically be found at very nice prices on the secondary market. So I'm down for a Doxa vote with the caveat it be the COSC version. Probably one of the best WIS decisions I've made was to get the COSC version of the 750T Pro.;) This just looks good!yourock.gif

Hey Stuart...you do have quite a dilema here! I do not own either one yet...but here's to 2010 being the year that I add an Oris and a Doxa.;) I have actually been looking at Doxa timepieces over the last couple weeks (I have been thinking about pulling the trigger on the 5000T with the current sale offered by Doxa). Anyway, noticing that you are considering the 1000T and 1200T Doxa models in addition to the 800T, you obviously realize the 800 model has the tritium tubes which you may or may not like. One thing that I was not aware of when initially comparing the 1000T and 1200T models to the 5000T and others was that the 1000T and 1200T are "smaller" than the 800Ti, 750T, & 5000T models ... a couple millimeters which may make a difference on your wrist depending on what you tend to like. I have a very good friend with a 1000T military sharkhunter, and it fits fine. When I first saw the 800Ti, I was really ready to pull the trigger on that one, but I just like the bracelets better on the other models. The 5000T does really sing to me, and my biggest concern with the 800Ti is if the tubes can be replaced down the line. The material & movement should be nearly bulletproof, but the tubes will slowly die out. With a $2900 price tag, don't know if I want to be saddled with that in the future (this is what steers me away from Ball watches too). Stu

I voted for the 800Ti. I personally prefer the gas tubes for their constant and consistent glow properties. I own and have owned a number of Luminox watches, Trias watches, a Graf Zeppelin tube and C-3 SuperLuminova watch, and a Ball night train with over 60 gas tubes on the dial and hands. My 15 year old Luminox Alarm clock still glows and I expect to last for another few years. Lume is still strong on my 5 year + old Luminox watches. The Ball watch is simply awesome with all the glowing tubes on the dial. I'm not sure where the perception comes that gas tubes are gonna go dead in 5 to 7 years. I don't see it being a problem. Luminox does or did guarantee their tubes for 10 years. And, most all claim they can last up to 20 to 25 years. In the same period of time, most Superluminova treated watches will most likely need re-luming also. So, the only disadvantage to tubes might be cost should you own the watch in 10 to 15 years and decide to replace the tubes. There are at least a dozen or more new brands using gas tubes in their watches, so my guess is the ability is out there (or will be) to re-tube my Ball or Traser should it ever come to that. If you don't like the idea of the gas tube on the watch due to the way it looks or something, ok.
