A true modern classic watch in my opinion,
is a timepiece that is 15 years old and still fit in
with today's trend of big watches.

My favorite is the Concord Impressario Automatic Chronograph,
this bad-boy housed the famous Zenith El-Primero Automatic
Column Wheel Movement. The retail price of this watch
was $9,995 Canadian, when it was released in 1999.

This was the same movement that Rolex used for their
1970-2000 Daytonas. As of 2001-Current Daytona use the
Valjoux 7750.

In today's terms, the Concord Impressario Automatic Chronograph, can be bought for $2,995 US. It's a little
newer than 15 years old, however it is the exclusivity that
makes this watch a rare find.

Another favorite of mine, is the 1989-95 Breitling
Chronomat Automatic.  This was known as the "Seinfeld"
watch worn by Jerry Seinfeld in his sitcom.

This watch current sells for $1,500 US or less on the used market. Even if you went for the two tone model you're only spending $2,500 max.  What I like about it is the fact, that the rotating bezel is identical to the Breitling Colt and Super Ocean Series. The downside, the Chronomat often gets mistaken for a fake.

The Michael Schumacher Omega Speedmaster Automatics
are nice, these come in Red,Yellow,Blue,Silver and Black
Checkered board dials. Depend on condition, these sell
for $850-$1,300 respectively. However, these are
piggy-back movements. What that means,is that
the modules gets replaced if any problems should occur.

So,what will be:

I choose the Concord Impressario Automatic Chronograph,
due to the fact, that the Zenith El-Primero Movement beats
at an incredibly high 36,000 vibrations per hour.
Making it the most accurate mechanical timepiece money
can buy. Secondly, the triple date calendar pays homage
to the Movado Calendomatic Watches of the 1950's.

Cheers,
Simon

Simon, just a correction.
The current Daytonas use a Rolex in house, cal. 4130 column wheel chrono movement.

Thank you Graham and Jeff
for correcting me on the Rolex 4130.

I've got the self-winding Rolex Daytonas
confused with the earlier hand wound Valjoux versions.

Cheers,
Simon

Yes Simon, the Primero is an outstanding movement. My grail will have one beating inside... But somehow, I prefer the Zenith Rainbow models:dude:
