U.S. Customs authorities oversaw the destruction of about 7000 counterfeit Rolex watches at a contractor’s site in Philadelphia. The fakes met their fate under a multi-ton double-drum steamroller, which ran over the watches about 10 times. Customs officials staged the destruction to highlight law enforcement’s role in protecting intellectual property rights.

The watches were seized from Binh Cam Tran who is serving six years in federal prison after being convicted of trafficking in counterfeit goods, conspiracy, and nine counts of money laundering. Binh was also ordered to pay Rolex USA $2,273,166 in restitution.

Authorities say Binh fabricated hundreds of thousands of fake Rolex watches in his home near Philadelphia. Officials seized about 24,000 counterfeit watches, and enough parts to create 1 million more.

"...enough parts to create a million more..." sounds like a lifetime's work, or would require a serious dedicated factory to make so many!

The debate about fakes has raged for many years. IMHO, if he was infringing copyright, or if the watches had "Rolex" on the dials, then he deserved every penny of the fine, and every day in prison.

Don't get me wrong - I own a few "homage" watches (no fake brand names, no attempt to pass off as the real thing). But there's something "creepy" about a $50 "Rolex" that gets me on that soapbox...

What always surprises me is that if these dedicated "fake watch" makers put as much effort into creating their own legit watches and their own brand, they would probably sell just as many and not be breaking the law mistake.gif.

Have a good day y'all!

Last news: The customs of Miami docks seized a container loaded with 150 000 Invictas coming from HK.
They will not go under the steamroller as no high-ranked experts could find out if they was false or real...
