Hey guys,

I received an email from Brandon Marion yesterday.  Mr. Marion is the new owner at Debaufre.  He wrote to thank me for my recent purchase of the CSAR.  He also wanted my thouights on my new watch and if there was anything Debaufre could do for me.  Well, my wife had already mowed the lawn with her new mower.  (It was a Mothers Day present from me.  It's motorized and self-propelled and everything.)  Therefore, I was stumped for a service Debaufre could perform for me.

Mr. Marion also asked where I had heard about Debaufre watches and I told him I first learned of them on 3T.  I told him Debaufre used to have their own forum on 3T and that their watches were well liked by 3T forumites.  Hopefully he willl contact the O man and reestablish a presence here.

Yup, I still see the link! I don't think they have their own forum though.

Also why is a lot of their range or the other way round the same as Stienheart? Are they joined or the same supplier?
Not complaining I was just looking.

Hello ND,

As I understand it both companies get their watches from the same sourse, who's name, of course, I forgot.  Steinhart had to establish themselves in the USA using a different name due to copyright issues as I understand it.  They chose Debaufre.  This is all from memory so don't take it to the bank.

This is correct. Steinhart sells under its name in Europe and Debaufre is the name created for the U.S. Yes, there was a forum for Debaufre. But, it went away when there was little or no contact from the new owners.

Grovana supposedly makes the cases for the Ocean and GMT diver-style watches. Robert watches (still in business) also has some connection (or did) to Steinhart.

I would just add that currently...(Year 2010)...Steinhart and Debaufre have absolutely no business connection whatsoever...all previous relationships (ie. Europe to USA) have been completely disolved and they are separate, non-related companies today with separate owners, marketing, and customer service.

You will notice the "old" watch designs shared common design elements (even identical except for branding differences).  The NEW designs from these two companies share no commonality IMO.

Many thanks for the input, I was looking at watches and noticed they were similar apart from logo but only on some models.
Again thanks for info.

below is the official post from Alldaron the past Pres. of DeBaufre who is no longer affiliated with the company....3T supports many watch companies and even more the people behind those companies and such was the case with DeBaufre...we had a great relationship with Jon,Elsa and Alldaron whom I still speak with today and they treated us very kindly with specials and discounts...there was even talk of a 3T watch with an older movement Jon had tucked away but due to unforseen circumstances is now on hold with hopes that Alldaron returns with his own new brand of watches...

Firstly: I wanted to share my opinion on the steinhart 1000m triton. I like the design, I like the pvd case, very smooth looking. I can see what people are saying about the orange ring on the dial, but I like the contrast. The buckle wouldn't be my first choice, but overall I feel the watch is a nice creation.

Secondly: I've read a bunch of confusion about the relationship between Debaufre and Steinhart and I wanted to officially comment about it.

My father (Jon D.) and I started this company about 5 years ago in the U.S. under the name of Steinhart. We picked the Steinhart name because the guy we had employed as our designer, at the time, had that name. We built up a reputation for service and quality products.

Two years into it, we were threatened with a lawsuit from Steinhausen to change our name. We decided not to be in court for the next few years, so after long research we found the historic name of Debaufre. Once the change went into effect, our designer decided he didn't want to work for a company not bearing his name and abruptly abandoned us, went back to Germany, took our past designs with him and started his own little company. He is not associated with us. Regardless we don't hold a grudge and contrary to our attorney's legal advice, we don't intend to pursue legal actions.

With my father recently retiring and the addition of Brandon (our new CEO) and a few other key individuals, some fundamental changes are in progress for Debaufre. To clarify, we are still a U.S. based company, we still maintain the strictest attention to customer service and exceptional manufacturing and we are building up to be a global company.

What's changing is the underlying definition of our stylistic branding, slowly transitioning from traditional homage pieces to custom designed pieces. Naturally in any evolution there's going to be some misses among the hits and not every design is going to resonate with everyone, but this is to be expected. Our vision for the future of Debaufre is as a unique brand, but the road to that goal traverses peaks and valleys. We regularly conduct design surveys and gather advice from watch aficionados to guide our creative compass.

Our recent releases, including our 2000m Triton, are a first step towards that goal. Each design resonates with a different expectation of function and style, granted perhaps not the duplicate homage pieces you are used to, but viewed under unbiased light and given a fair chance, these watches are great in their own right. Remember that many of our designs are a direct result of the input from fellow members on the watch forums.

I hope this clarifies any remaining confusion surrounding Debaufre and the German off-shoot company. If you have any questions, please let us know.

~ Alldaron
