I am happy to see someone build this homage! TY Sean, and Congrats!ThumbsUp02.gif

ANTIQUA DSS1953

Hi All,
All of you have the priviledge to be the first to see some 'spy shots' of the first watch for ANTIQUA, a homage to the Deep Sea Special by Rolex called the DSS1953. Pics of first samples are shown. Lots of changes planned for the case, it's too thin on the sides (about 4mm less!!), The lugs should extend further downwards, making the watch closer to the wrist. The finishing was also wrong, the bevel on the edge was not done, in the picture they are hand done hastily by me so I can visualize the final result. Crown tube not as we designed, should be installed with a hex key, and it's missing a huge O-ring which results in the final tube protruding out (like the gen), right now it's flush into the case which is not accurate. The bezel is also supposed to be raised much further giving it more prominence. We are experimenting with the dial printing, will show some pics of the mockup later-on. We will proceed to do the dials as per original spec, with the lume dots raised in a dome shape, with a very very very thin black outline before the gold outline. The gold printing will be printed first, and black printed around it, to give the words the illusion of 'coming through'. We have sourced a maker for our spring loaded bracelets, I'll show a mock-up with the bracelet we intend to create, and the dials during the weekend. I'm also planning for two versions of the case. The original as shown is actually about 60+mm Lug-lug. You can't wear it, but honestly I'm not sure how many people are actually going to wear this..... We will also have a shorter version that has 48mm lug-lug, and supply that with a leather or rubber strap. There will be an option for sapphire or hardened mineral. So, the tease ends here, we will send more pics later and an official press release about the new brand. Right now as you can tell..... excitement is overflowing out of me! Follow the development of the DSS1953 on oceanictime.blogspot.com as drawings, sample pictures and a step-by-step creation of this historic timepiece is revealed!
Happy Chinese New Year to all
Ciao, Sean

I see what you mean Oscar. But it's been there since 60years and except G&W , seems like nobody paid attention. Now Helberg prepare it's own version wich I like coz it has it's own vibe with turning bezel but I smell a following Asian wave comming on and I guess that's it's just a matter of time before Hell'n'arou and Par'nice surf on it...
What I mean is that IMO , Hellberg dared and been lifting interest: So the wave startshomerthinks.gif

you know once an Asian case is created that there will always be more than one version Will...it is nice to see 2 different approaches to the same iconic watch imo...ThumbsUp02.gif

Oh, yes I know... I'm glad that Helberg went for them version: Or I don't think I would have gone for it.
The original DSS crystal and case must be a pain in the wrist to wear.
This watch gets you slapped and sued as soon you enter a crowded area and hit unwillingly a woman's behind dog smile.gif
It's just the way it goes which I find funny and typical.
I guess that if a remake of the 82 US-Marines model creates more attention than the earlier RXW , we'll see the same development....

Once perfected, I'm sure to buy one and will wear it....the smaller version. Helberg's is ok, too, but I prefer the flatter glass on that one.
Thanks for sharing, O. I think this is a cool piece.

"Flatter glass on that one" ?

I would say that the Helberg has a more friendly crystal...

William, the Helberg has a flat glass version of this. Easier to wear. If I go bubble-top, I'll ding those elevator doors at the office for sure. subtlelaugh.gif

Hi guys,

I'm glad you guys like what you see. Just to clarify the Antiqua brand is a totally separate venture from moVas.

moVas is all about modern, new designs, whereas the Antiqua brand is about vintage military homage designs. The Antiqua brand will also deal with other items like belts, wallets, bags, and other leather/ fashion accessories.

For the DSS1953, it is a homage of the first DSS. It is unlike the Helberg in that it is as close to a 1:1 design. Naturally it is unwearable, but that's not really the point of this piece. It is a true nod to the historical value of this piece. It will be unlikely that you see many variations of this beast as it's just not a very popular design to put out there, and yes it's not a catalogue case.

We will have 2 different versions when we launch it, first will be the exact dimensions as the originals, and another will be a more wearable version that is about 48mm lug-lug. It will also come with either a sapphire or an acrylic. The current sample is with a sapphire, and it's really heavy.... I thought the moVas diver was heavy, this is another level.

Current thought is that it will be housing a Sellita SW220, and we are stock-piling these movements for all the other antiqua models coming soon.

I guess the 1/1 model will be for the fans... It's nice to get it done exactly like it was: One must always try even its not something who's designed to please the eye, it has it's history who will attract the die-hards for sure.
I think on my side that we'll see more wearable variants from now: After all, even I'm not into RÃ¥lex for 2 cents, I found the Helberg very attractive.
Good luck with your new venture Sean!
