I came across a pre-owned Panerai 111 locally. It has all boxes/papers whereas my sub does not. I was offered a trade for my sub where it was watch for watch and I pay the tax on the 111. I declined as I felt that the sub was worth a bit more than what they were asking for the 111 and I didn't see why I should pay tax when there wasn't actually a sale being made. Now having said that, I have been drawn to Panerai for awhile and can't get that damn 111 off my mind. So, just for fun I thought I'd post a poll and get everyones opinions.

I am not a Rolex fan but considering that the Pam111 houses an ETA 6497-2 with modified bridges, it can't compare in my eyes to an in-house as the Rolex Submariner. I find those Pam/ETA way overpriced and IMO you should expect that they will loose value with time since Paneraï goes in-house for the movements. Keep your sub or exchange it for a Pam312 for example if you can do the balance...

While I tend to agree with you in regards to the overpriced ETA movement aspect, I feel that the Panerais with those movements could possibly become more collectible in the future. As far as trading in on an in-house, The problem I run into are the ones I like have a tendency to be a bit prohibitively expensive. I'm pretty fond of the 372 and 422.

I guess that when you know the real price of this 6497-2 movement and that Soprod who makes the modifications and decorations has also a big plant in Hong-Kong you may wonder why you should pay so much. This one is apparently still waiting for a buyer... Super collector, oh yeah! http://forums.watchnet.com/index.php?t=tree&goto=486636&rid=0 By the way, my Ichthus houses the same type of movement without the fancy Rolex618 wannabe bridges for around 800$... It says much. http://www.timetechtalk.com/forum1/25699.html

what price has been determined on the Panny since you will be paying tax...if the price is less than what your Rolie is worth,or the 111 is overpriced, why trade imo...![]()

Oscar, they have a $4200 price tag on it and are pretty firm on the price. I feel my sub is worth more than that. I'm not planning on doing a trade with them. This was posted more to get feedback on the situation from others point of view and to try and generate some discussion. @Will... You could very well be correct and your logic makes sense. The older series panerai are more stupidly priced than the modern stuff.

In my eyes, they proposed you a crapy deal: In them favor of course... I have a rule as: Never trade a contemporary in-house for an ETA. Whatever the so called "status" of the brand using ETA. Panerai could never have sold those first ETA models at those prices without the 95 hype of hollywood and Sly: There you have it. But it's my own opinion about those PamEta and I make it without hearing the buzzing of those who scream "Buy it, it's the sh*t! It holds value! They will be rare! It's worth it since people pay high price for them!" and so on... I don't need TV stars, TV advertising or my rich neighbors to tell me what's cool or not, I judge myself, so that's why I have a special view on very known brands...

I believe my sub to be worth $4800-5000(no box/papers) and I know for fact they don't have $4200 into that Panerai. Also, I don't believe Panerai would have survived as a commercial enterprise if not for Stallone bringing them into the public eye.

Well, I wish you luck with your quest Murphy. If you really want to flip this sub, you could put it on the net and wait for good offers from serious people.

William is right. I'd never part with a Sub for that 111. Your Sub is worth much more. Pam 111 increasing in value over time? Doubtful, very doubtful. Sub increasing over time? Better chances. Stay with the Crown, amigo.
