quantity or knowledge? I categorize watch collectors into four different categories: 1- Those who believe that quantity makes one a watch collector, their main concern is to have a lot of watches. They also are not willing to pay a lot for a watch. Quantity will make one a watch collector, but without knowledge one may expect to pay a lot for something that is not worth what they paid for. They usually buy something today, regret the next day and try to sell it. 2- Those who buy what attract their eyes and pocket. They are not really concern about quantity, name on the dial or where the movement is from. They are concern about the looks and the price. They also usually buy, regret and try to sell what they bought. 3- Those who want status. They are willing to pay big bucks for watches, but quantity and knowledge are not their concern, although they usually own several watches. 4- Those who know what they buy. They have plenty of knowledge about brands, movement, reputation and value. I personally think that to enjoy this hobby you need quantity and knowledge. You certainly need more than one watch and continue to have a craving to buy more watches to be consider a wis. But remember, knowledge not only educates you but also keeps you from making mistakes. Mistakes are one of the things that watch collectors avoid, not only because it cost money, but also because you most likely will not be able to sell the watch for the same price you bought. So, IMO to enjoy the hubby of watch collecting, you need as I said “quantity and knowledge”. Again this is just MO, I would love to hear yours.

mmmmmmmmmmmmm....I would say either 1, 2, 3 or 4! To me it really doesn't matter why, as long as their is an appreciation for the end result!

Based on my years of collecting and accumulating watches, not to mention reading and subscribing to a plethora of books and magazines on the subject of horology IMHO the main thing to realize is that in order to be a true collector you most certainly must also be an IDIOT!!!!! Besides being an IDIOT!  I think #1 #2 and #3 is where most of us start out and fall into one of those categories early on with the end result hopefully being #4 which takes an amount of time and research which leads to experience like any other hobby or life experience  Enjoying the hobby is most important to me and researching movements and brand history have become as much a part of the hobby as owning watches...and of course meeting new WIS from around the World many of which have become lifelong friendsyourock.gif Price does not always mean value as there are many watches to be had at reasonable prices that meet criteria #4...it's the hunt!

1, 2 and 4, I can't pay big bucks for watches and I don't care about status. I just want lots of toys to play with and to learn as much as I possibly can about them. Hopefully, along with a watch, my Christmas present this year will be a full set of good tools and enrollment in the TZ courses :D Cheers, Griff

#2 hopefully growing into #4... then again, I took alook at this year in retrospect and I have acquired 27 new watches which I have kept and another 6 that have flipped along the way... its like 'on-the-job' training, but a lot of fun - and to me that's the bottom line... and the rush... ;)

"watch collector"; one who collects watches-for what ever reason??????? Do you must have knowledge of horology to collect watches??? Or simply be able to tell time?watch2.gif Do you have to adhere to a norm or Regional Construction or distribution of a watch??? Do watches have to be expensive or priceless possessions ??? well, if we're sharing humble opinions I think Status collectors aren't really watch collctors they're status collectors. However I think watch collectors do collect watches of status(all of them?) I break collectors down into 2 groups myself. Those appreciate asthetics and those who appreciate the micromechanics. naturally they cross over and I'm sure many appreciate both. I appreciate a good looking well designed watch but if it's quartz it holds no intrest for me. I do however encourage those that do collect quartz to continue hoping they'll grow into mechanical watches. of course this is all humble opinions:D
