Impressions of the Invicta Triumph Professional

Ok, I was suckered in watching shopNBC and seeing them throw an orange watch up. I have a problem…the orange always gets me. The watch seemed to be substantial, nicely executed and extremely well priced. I pulled the trigger although I have not heard too much to make me have much faith in Invicta products. I have never had an Invicta, and I thought it might be neat to try one of their budget pieces. The watch appealed to me on several levels; dial color, SS construction, large size, automatic movement and 200m water resistance. Bottom line: the watch was $99.98 with a promo code that got me $10 off. Final price $89.98 to my door which took almost no time.

The product per vendor:

An achievement in first class style!
Invicta Men's Stainless Steel Automatic Triumph Professional Bracelet Watch

Make a statement with the brand new Automatic FIX! Sharp and efficient, this sturdy timepiece features an automatic movement in a 44mm solid stainless steel exhibition case with surgical-grade stainless steel band. Sportsters will appreciate the screw-down crown for added water resistance. And traditionalists will enjoy the etched pattern dial with luminous markers and inner dial ring. This hardworking timepiece is water resistant to 200 meters.

The round dial has silver-tone luminous Arabic numerals at the 12:00, 3:00, 6:00 and 9:00 positions. Silver-tone luminous stick markers are featured at all remaining hour positions. There is a magnified date window between 4:00 and 5:00. This watch is fashioned with silver-tone luminous hour and minute hands, and a silver-tone second hand.

BLAH BLAH BLAH

I received the watch last Friday and have worn it since. It has seen duty shuttling vehicles through the night, managing toddlers at a zoo (including feces accident duty), road trippin’, yard work, and at work in a hospital setting. I have to say, with reservations, I am pleased with the watch. It is proving to be quite comfortable and utilitarian (except after dark) and is a dependable beater.

The styling leaves me a bit flat even though it is orange which is usually more than enough for me. Invicta missed the mark with this shade of orange that is washed out, a bit of a pastel and baby puke/poop color… perhaps sherbet… The watch looks best in direct sunlight and photographs fairly well, but in the end, this iteration of orange doesn’t do it for me. Nonetheless, it is orange so I will wear it.

Bracelet:

I will agree with Eric in that the bracelet is a bit on the cheapish side, particularly the clasp area. I find the clasp doesn’t want to lock, but once locked is very secure. The SS is fine but the design is again really leaving me flat. It is quite comfortable on my 7.25” wrist and is wide and solid. I don’t plan on swapping it out.

Movment:

The Miyota 8215 (I think) is a warhorse having pulled duty since just after the bicentennial. It seems to have oodles of power reserve and has run well. I am amazed at how active the rotor is and amazed the movement doesn’t hack. Naturally, at this price point, the movement is un-adjusted and un-decorated but who gives a rip for a beater? I don’t even know if they adjust or decorate Miyota movements…

Case:

The case is a nice block of SS with a nice flow and integrated crown guards protecting a screw down... It is plenty wide, thick and heavy to satisfy your masculine tendencies and has a mod, swoopy appearance. Eric was spot on when he said it had a “borderline mafia cool”. I felt a bit pimped out in a very chilled pimp way with the watch on… and I don’t usually feel pimped out…  The case is water resistant o 200m, which would almost make you think this watch is a diver. I am no diver and surely won’t be testing the water resistance…

Dial:

Things go south for me at this point… Again echoing Eric, I have to say the dial is too small due to the nonsensical bezel that ironically enough lends the watch some of its aesthetic kindness. The brushed bezel is really a crime with the goofy markings, lack of textured edge and cheap material. I don’t think it’s the same 316L as everything else though it may be just a different finish…it seems to pick up scratches a bit much and is bloody impossible to grasp and turn rendering the “Diver” element of this watches styling a foolish afterthought. The dial itself is the aforementioned heinous orange with a wavy ridged pattern. The indices appear to be coated in lum, but the lum sure isn’t worth a s**t. The Black 5 minute ring around the outside of the dial is clean and legible. The Invicta marking and other wording on the dial are adequate. The three hands are garbage appearing to have been pilfered from a generic parts bin. The dial would have benefited greatly from a bit more oomph and some quality hands. All this is covered by an adequate mineral crystal with a less than needed or wanted (by me) date magnifier over the 4 o’clock date position.

Overall:

I am happy with the watch given the pittance I paid for it. In fact, the transaction was completely worry free. The watch arrived well packaged and the Invicta presentation is just fine in my world. The watch had plastic over the bracelet and caseback but not the crystal, which I found a bit odd. There were no visible defects on the piece. The bracelet was fairly easy to size…though my hammer mechanic needed a 12 lb. The piece fits well and is a watch you will know you are wearing with a touch of heft (SIZE DOES MATTER) and enough size to be noticed. My non-WIS colleagues were decidedly mixed on their feelings. My office mates both disliked it immediately while other folks actually said they liked it immediately. My office mates have more discerning eyes!! Of course, they find it amusing I am again sporting an orangie!!! I like it as a casual beater that I can basically do anything in and not worry about. Truth be told I have quite a few beaters I have grown to like too much…no worries of that happening with the Invicta. A great value at the price and I feel an overall good buy. Plus it was kinda fun having quasi-intelligent discourse…

Thanks for taking the time…and be good,

Pax
