I would have thought a mechanical link wouldn't depend on speed of crown rotation?

Regarding flicking the crown quickly to advance through the digital functions, is this based on a hall effect sensor?...ie a slow rotation doesn't generate enough current, but a quick flick does generate enough to flip a circuit? I would have thought a mechanical link wouldn't depend on speed of crown rotation?
