Good Question HW...I have a Article Somewhere I will look for but for Starters a Good Polishing Cloth is one of the Safest Methods as Well as getting a small jar of Crystal Clear...both of these items are relatively Easy to use and Safe IMHO and I have had Excellent results ..I am constantly Cleaning My Watches
Now of course Gold Plated Watches are a Different Story,and generally trying whatever method you want too use is best trying on the Rear of the watch 1st as a sort of test area to make sure the Plating won't wear off...Hmmm...Invicta Comes to mind but I have taken the Gold Finish off a Timex Once as well 
With SS I would say There should'nt be any hesitation on Your Part to try the Materials You mentioned as I doubt You will wear the SS away...just be careful around any painted ot colored surfaces ie: numerals or markers say on the bezel as the polish will generally remove these colorations...If You have a Old Watch that is of No Importance as We all have somewhere in our Collections practicing on one of These May prove helpful..I hope I haven't confused You,but then I will look for the Article I mentioned 
Are there any websites or written info on how to properly remove scratches and other blemishes. I know about the materials to use ie... cape cod cloth, a buffing stick etc... I'm afraid to use them, because with out the proper instruction, I don't want to ruin any of my collection. It wpuld be nice to have reference material to go back and check up on. Thanks
