Dan....I can't believe I am saying this, but I would recommend a quartz watch.  If he is the kind of guy that takes his watch off a lot, then (I would think) he doesn't want to go "hassle" of winding and resetting....Shady's recommendation of the ORSA quartz Military, with a nice after market leather band, is an excellent suggestion.  Seiko and Orient also make a plethora of trouble free models.
