 Well Mario, when a man's going to buy a watch, ya just gotta do it.  You know it's one of those "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do." kind of things.

I once wanted to buy a new pistol that I needed like another hole in the head.  I knew she who cooks would blow her top if I asked her opinion, so I just went and bought the gun.  Well, when she found out, she blew her top, as expected, and asked why I didn't talk to her first.  I told her I knew she'd say no and since I was going to buy the gun anyway I thought it would be better if was only be mad because I bought another gun...not that I defied her AND bought another gun.

I think the saying "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission" might come into play here too.
