 While keeping the dial level point the hour hand in the direction of the sun.

Turn the crown at the 9 o'clock position to set south on the rotating compass ring to the middle point of the arc between the 12 o'clock marker and the time scale indicated by hour hand.  The direction markers on the ring indicate the corresponding directions.

It is only a rough idea of direction but it does work.
