Hello, there is no maintenance required for the helium valve, just do not open it around water. it is to be used if you find yourself in a decompression chamber after a deep dive. It is not needed for recreational diving. I am certified PADI Open Water 2 Rec diving, but maybe some of the guys that were in the Navy, or more advanced divers can answer more, but I can tell you if you don't know how to use it, then you don't need to open it. there is no harm in opening it, just make sure you close it before you go swimming or take a shower. :D
