I suspect they're doing very well where they are; their price is half (or more) of their cachet.  Read just the other day that they spent $48m+ on advertising in the U.S. in 2008.  I don't know how many watches they sell, but if you figure 100k watches a year, that's an additional $500 per watch just because of US advertising!  (check my math...)

I join you, though, in lamenting how the prices have risen - it's astounding.  I would love to own a bunch of their watches, but it's doubtful I ever will, because of pricing... have a hard time coughing up $4k+ for a watch (and that seems to be their new minimum) when there are so many great options back in the $1k range.

(And I'd disagree with the characterization of their cases as the most durable... so far as I know, they don't do anything special/just std stainless, while some companies use different hardening processes)
