An optical mouse is pretty much a standard thing these days. It uses an infrared type light instead of a mechanical ball. The advantages are increased tracking precission and no cleaning (of the ball) required. Prices have fallen on these mice to as low as $9.95.
For more money you can get a wireless optical mouse. I personally haven't found one I like, but many people love them. I use one on my PC, but I use a wired mouse on my MAC.
