 Sounds like the friend is a lady, therefore I would suggest this one (Photo from Gnomon watches site):



This is 39 mm, Titanium, well lumed, Swiss Auto, $400 at Gnomon watches, Sapphire. I had one and it is very well made, the titanium keeps it light but big enough to see, very visible black dial with high contrast white numbers. 39 mm should be pretty big for a lady but not overwhelming. 20mm lugs is a pretty common size and it should be easy to find different bands if needed.
